1980 puch magnum ii running poorly

Recently acquired an 80 puch magnum ii from a friend that was running fine a year ago. After tinkering and learning ignition coil was no good (and replacing it) cleaning carb, it started. It seems to idle fine but smokes like a chimney. Also it bogs down to a halt/stall when giving it anything past half throttle. Runs extremely hot also. Any suggestions

Re: 1980 puch magnum ii running poorly

Clean the tank if needed, new fuel line & filter, cook the exhaust out over a hot bbq then seafoam the head through the plug hole after warming it all up.

Let it run and smoke out for a long while, you may notice a change in the smoke color/smell as the seafoam burns off. if it's still happening you may have a leaky seal.

I’ll try that. Thanks

Re: 1980 puch magnum ii running poorly

It does kinda sound like a clogged exhaust...if so, it should run noticably better with the exhaust removed...not as good as with a clean pipe, but better than it's running now.

Did you clean the points? fine sandpaper or a points file ideally...

Re: 1980 puch magnum ii running poorly

Definitely was the exhaust. Ran the best it ever has after removing it/cleaning
