Trimming cables

Has anyone successfully used any of these techniques from the wiki to build their own cable ends? Twice I've tried the last one that uses JBweld but it just doesn't hold. I'm going to attempt soldering the ends in, but thought i'd ask if anyone has any other experiences trimming cables.

Re: Trimming cables

Eh just use a knarp. I've done the solder thing in the past, works but your cable has to be really really clean.

Nowadays I just buy a bunch cheap long inners on fleabay, cut to size, and knarp one end.

Yeah, Knarps just work. I have also had great luck using a knarp and then soldering into the hole to lock it in

Re: Trimming cables

How the fuck do you get knarps to work? Either I bust them trying to tighten them down or they just slip out... I've never had one work for me!

Is there some magic trick to them?

Re: Trimming cables

if u solder a new cable b4 u cut it keeps from fraying. pretty straight forward. hold knap w pliers and tighten w appropriate tool. Reading the wiki, id use brass instead of aluminum as plumbing solder i doubt sticks to aluminum. wishful tinking on both those entries, just use a knarp.

I use vice grips on knarps . I've made many cables with them, cut them/filed/drilled them and they still hold up strong.

Re: Trimming cables

on top of what everyone else is saying - use liquid flux and a solder pot - i just use a pipe cap filled with lead and a torch.

recently got some felco C7 wire rope cutters and they work amazing. i can trim 1/8" off at a time on 2.5mm with no fraying or distortion.

birdcage the ends - or at least fake it - i typically countersink the cable end a little and fray the core

Re: Trimming cables

I’m not sure what your trying to make for a cable but the best idea would be to start with something already complete.

Don’t bother trying to make the small end for the carb those are so small. Find a complete cable cut it to the length you need on the twist throttle side.

Park makes a tool to recrimp a new metal cap onto the cable housing & luckytwo stroke did sells Knarps that you solder into place instead of a set screw. Maybe if you buy a brass knarp you can solder it.

Re: Trimming cables

I made this years ago with a piece of aluminum, bandsaw, and a drill.

Re: Trimming cables

Used silver solder and a torch. Works best if you spread the cable wires a bit with a pick or something so the solder flows in between. Clean it up with a Dremel or file.

Never had one come off. (edited)

Re: Trimming cables

Buy the good knarps...had some from 77 give me problems years ago, never had any issues with treats knarps tho....

Always used bicycle derailer cables for throttles...dun know what ur working on

Re: Trimming cables

For the small end on a throttle cable, I use a mig welder and a coupla zaps on the end of the cable gives you a permanent little ball.
