Engine idles but creates zero power

Hi all,

Like the subject says, my 1984 Puch Maxi will idle but generate no horsepower; I have zero acceleration, but for whatever reason sometimes I can get some if I have a little bit of a pedaling head start. If I accelerate from rest I do not move.

-I first started by cleaning up the carb- no luck, the thing was clean as is.

-I then placed an external condenser where the two blue wires are held in the wire block- no luck.

-I then noticed that the horn sporadically goes off, so I jumped its wires together with a piece of heat shrink wrap- still no luck.

-I've since cleaned the points with a metal nail file and still have had no luck.

My spark plug is black and sooty, which if I'm not mistaken indicates an overly-rich fuel ratio, an ignition malfunction, or that I should try a spark plug with a higher heat rating. The needle is already at the leanest (highest) position available, so I doubt that is the problem. I don't know if the spark I have is weak because I have nothing to compare it to, so if anyone has a good link on that that would be appreciated. Does anyone have a suggestion for what to do next? Do I get new points altogether? New ignition coil? I've read about a problem similar to this that was the result of an engine with too many air gaps, should I measure compression next? It's getting warm out and I want to ride this darn thing :(

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

Fuel is flowing freely from the petcock and filling the float bowl quickly?

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

Fuel flow is fine

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

What's the timing and point gap set to?

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

I just rebuilt a Maxi with this problem. In my case it was a combination of timing and bad case seals causing it to run like shit and have no power.

You didn't mention if the problem appeared suddenly of if the bike has been sitting for a while.

You don't mention setting the points gap and retiming the ignition after filing the points; this is important.

If it ran last week or before being put up it's not the jetting or the spark plug heat range; an engine's jetting and spark plug requirements don't change just because the bike has been sitting. Does it have an air filter (clogged)? And, you really need to see to your ignition timing.(edited)

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

Timing is 17 degrees BTDC and gap is set to 0.016"

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

What’s the status of the clutch?

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

Wesley Ambrosini /

Does it rev out on the stand?

Re: Engine idles but creates zero power

Clutch any good? Correct fluid and level in the case? Does the engine rev with the throttle like normal, or does it die out under throttle? You said it doesnt generate power, but if it doesn't rev at all either, then explore ignition/gas issues. If it runs great, but doesn't go anywhere, your problem lies elsewhere.
