Need help with Peugeot 103

I have an issue I've had serious trouble figuring out and any help would be much appreciated. My moped has resistance when I try to roll it. It will roll easier for a couple inches and then has a lot of resistance. It gets easier to move when I removed the spark plug.

Sounds like your clutch may be sticking. Does it sound sort of like it's running when the kill switch is off and your walking?

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Thanks for the quick reply! I have the exhaust and head off right now and I can hear air being sucked into the car and a plunk noise from the cylinder. Is the clutch located in the variator?

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

So I found this bit of damage so far.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Maybe I'm blind , exactly what damage are we looking at ?

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

I didn't notice it right away in person haha. It's that metal around the plastic in the middle. It's been bent. That's the only noticeable damage. Honestly, I'm not sure what to even look for that would make it lock up.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Pretty sure that bent metal was/is intentional 'damage' .

It's meant to lock the nut it's against from turning .

Alright, your clutch is part of your variator. Take a look at this: https://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Peugeot_103_stock_clutch/variator_assembly_by_Cheetahchrome

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

So is there a different part of the clutch that could be stuck besides the arms? The picture I'm attaching shows what I think are the arms and they're moving

Those arms are your starter clutch. they're supposed to swing out against the clutch Bell and turn over the engine to start it. I'm going to guess as long as you have springs on the starter clutch arms, they wouldn't be the issue. Did you take a look at the link? Make sure you have all of the parts and reassemble it as instructed. Test it and it should spin pretty freely until about 3-4 mph and the starter clutch will engage turning over the engine.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

The springs seem to pull them in fine. Yes! I want carefully through the build three times and it only spins freely if the crankshaft variator nut is loose. I did notice some potential warping in the centrifugal clutch lining disc. Are they supposed to be perfectly flat?? I attached a picture of it from the side.

Well, that may be an issue... It should spin fairly free when then Nut is tight

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

look at the diagram above, your probably missing a spacer.

^ Make sure you have everything. And that it is the proper orientation

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Well the only missing item I have is the dress cover. That was never on it when I got it and it worked fine for years. I'll go through the build a couple more times. Does anyone know if the clutch liner is supposed to be perfectly flat or not? I'm concerned that it warped from heat.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

9/10 if the clutch is sticking its the spacer that goes on under the ball plate is upside down.

^^Yes. That's what it sounds like. But yeah that clutch should be flat.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Okay. Tonight I'll go through the build, making sure I try the clutch spacer both ways. I also messaged treatland to ask how it compares to their new ones. Hopefully that's all that's wrong with it.

This spacer. The flat portion faces away from the engine. Your definitely going to need a new clutch pad.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Josiah made all good points. Mainly the orientation of the beveled washer he is holding.

The only other thing that gets out of whack on assembly is the inner nylon hub bushing. It has the two notches that must sit in the corresponding hub notches.

Also "clocking" all components that have a double D hole to face the same way.

Oh yeah.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

Yeah, I got the spacer and the nylon bushing accounted for. I actually noticed a crack in one of the fins for the clutch liner. I'll be ordering a new one soon and I'll check in when I get it installed. I really appreciate all your help! Thank you.

Re: Need help with Peugeot 103

So... Good news! The bike is now rolling like its supposed to, with the new clutch liner disk installed. Can't thank you all enough for your help. This is my first real time working on my bike and I've gained some confidence with it.
