My brakes are working as a kill switch?

Anthony Sanchez /

So every time I hit my brakes the bike will turn off. Any one as to why? I checked the kill switch wires, I unplugged them as well and it still does it!

I think on some bikes if your brake light bulb is burnt out it'll kill the bike every time you apply brakes

You’re right. I just put back the original bulb and now it doesn’t do that haha!

Been there..suffered that! Many miles from home. Had to coast thru stop signs or restart it every time.

Re: My brakes are working as a kill switch?

I just wrote this for a guy with opposite problem so I'll repost:

Basically the issue is that the coil for the ignition grounds through the brakes. When riding along, the levers are released, it's grounded through the brake switches, and the ignition still sparks. When you pull the levers to brake, it breaks the ground and the power instead goes through the brakelight bulb, causing it to light up, and it is grounding through the bulb (and/or rear resistor) and still sparking.

The most common problem this creates is if there's an issue in the bulb or wiring, then it can't ground through the bulb, and pulling the brakes makes spark cut out.

The properest fix is replacing the bulb with correct voltage/wattage replacement, ensuring the ceramic insulated resistor block (if there is one) is in OK shape, and ensuring your wires are all connected and proper and clean at the connections.

The common easy fix is just ground the brakelight wire directly from the engine. you lose the brakelight functionality but your bike runs even when you're braking and it isn't going to screw you later for just a brakelight issue. You can rewire the brakelight to run off your lighting coil if you wish, but it requires different switch buttons. Easiest, just use hand signals. if you've got a headlight and taillight you're legal.

Awesome thank you!!! So I had redone the wiring because my kill switch wasn’t working, and also changed the rear bulb. So I thought that I had rewired it back wrong hahah.. turns out I just put the wrong bulb. So I put the old one back in and the problem was gone.. lol!!!

Re: My brakes are working as a kill switch?

If it ever dies on a ride and theres no bulb around you can ground the brake wire directly (or usually just tape the two wires together from the switch on the hand lever, or tape those to ground out against the bars) and get running to get home
