Lights fade when squeeze brakes on moby

mike thompson /

77 Moby that runs great. It had a blown cdi when I got it and it didn't run. So I don't know what the lights did before I got it. I put on a new cdi and it ran but the lights nearly fade out when I squeeze either brake handle. Anyone ever have this problem?

battery operated lights would eliminate that...a good back-up anyway

Some dimming it at idle would be normal. You may want to check all of the bulbs to see that they are all the correct wattage.

They dim to almost nothing when I squeeze either brake handle. I will check but doesn't sound like bulb wattage

Do they brighten right up with a little bit of throttle? Is the idle speed just too low?

Check the ground strap, and all grounds on the bike.

same thing happens to me when i choke myself.

You might want to do some troubleshooting of the brake light circuit. First I'd remove the brake light bulb and try again. Does the headlight still dim or not?

I think you might have a short to ground in the brake light circuit. I've seen this before in "big" motorcycles. Whether removing the brake light bulb changes anything or doesn't should tell you what part of the circuit to look at most closely.

If in fact the wattage of the brake light bulb is higher than spec, that could cause the problem as well.
