gas tank woes

My 1990 Tomos A3 Bullet has a gas tank that is part of the frame. It's a real mess with rust and I have been working on it for two weeks using evapo-rust, metal rescue, you name it. It has cleaned up a lot, but no matter how much I treat it and flush it, the rust particles keep coming.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever mounted a tank over the existing, integrated moped tank? Maybe added some tubing between the existing tank and the front of the seat post and then added a cafe style tank? I have attached a couple of images: one of my step through and one of a Tomos cafe style. The frames look similar except for the part where the tank is mounted.

What do you think>

Re: gas tank woes

I think you should coat the tank immediately after you flush it with 2 T oil . that should help keep the rust at bay . Then try to keep the tank filled .

Re: gas tank woes

If it's not leaking, just keep running it with a paper pleated in line filter.Like PD said, don't leave it half-full,fill it after your rides. Meantime a large tank is a plus,so find one that'll fit over the tomos frame.

Re: gas tank woes

Tomos top tank will fit fine but you’re missing mounts on that frame. You could probably weld something on that works but MLM makes a pair of bolt on mounts that’ll make it real easy to toss one on there.

Re: gas tank woes

i had the same with a pug 103 I restored, it would clean up good then rust over again within a day, like others have said as long as the tank is not leaking and you have got rid of all the large flakes of rust (if not fill with the required cleaning product and add a bag of 1cm metal nuts and give it a good shake) just fill it with mixed gas and oil to the top as soon as its cleaned and fit a filter after the gas tap, the fuel may be orange for a couple of tanks of gas but it will eventually settle down as the oil lays a coating. just change the filter every so often. I have attached a pic of the type that would be best as it will trap all the small particles.

ensure you but the correct sized ones as thy come in lots of different sizes and pipe sizes. On ebay or similar you should be able to get a pack of 5 for a few dollars.

Re: gas tank woes

You can seal it with Caswell tank sealer. It works over rust. But you have to spin your whole frame around since you can't remove the tank.

Thanks for all the great advice. Bairdco you're right about rotating the frame. It is THE problem with trying to clean and coat the tank. I'm not a fan of these integrated tanks

Re: gas tank woes

It might be rust, it might be varnish.

Tomos tanks collect really badly at the bottom, and then there is almost a divider on each side of the bottom part of the tank. Shine a bright flashlight in there and you'll see.

I'm gonna guess you have a giant chunk of stuff at the bottom. You want to get a pressure washer and absolutely bomb it at that bottom corner of the tank and try to free up the cluster of old crap. Do it with a friend and flip the bike upside down and dump what you can out the fill hole. Repeat 10x or so.

Then use your chemicals and repeat the process as many times as necessary.

Evaporust is basically a converter, so you really shouldnt get any "rust" coming back after you eradicate whatever mess is at the bottom.

I had a very bad maxi tank once....it was rusty, but it was also super crusty. I took a handful of 1 inch drywall screws and hot water/degreaser and shook the crap out of it when I had it disassembled down to the frame. The sharp screws broke apart all the debris, and what came out was chunks of fossilized gasoline/lacquer and gunk about the volume of a baseball, some chunks the size of a ping pong ball.

I probably would have never gotten that out or know about it without the screws, and would have been doomed to a life of inexplicably dirt gas. Cant seem to find the pictures though.

No one will ever beat what came out of my Testi Weekend Cross tank.

Re: gas tank woes

this is a really good way of cleaning your tank. it's not English but subtitles and watching will be more than enough information
