1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

Jammie Smith /

I have been working on this on and off for a few years. I think its the condenser. It starts and runs then just dies. Any help will be appreciated.

In B/S you are asking how much for your bike, " good condition and runs."

Now here you say it runs and then dies lol

Say goodbye to that Million Dollars!

Runs good until it doesn’t.....mannn

Cheek for airleaks.

Pop a quick condenser on there and see.

Is the choke releasing? Then clean the carb thoroughly if the idle is turned up to a proper setting.

The body is near perfect and it runs intermittently. My buddy switched the condenser out with his from a different vehicle. Up until then it was running fine. Now either that's the problem or something else. I really should dedicate some time to it but I'm a stay at home Dad of a 2 year old boy. Hard to get time to spend in the Garage.

Does anyone know where I can find a condenser? Maybe an aftermarket or cheap alternative?

Super Beetle condenser from any auto part store

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

with vespas ground blue wire to isolate brake crap from ignition crap.

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

You can use any condenser. Half the time the guys behind the counter don't even know what it is.

I ask for a 1970 Ford F100 6cyl condenser. It's the same thing as all the others. When I've asked for condensers from foreign cars, they're usually gone. But, an old American car is more commonly found.

But you're better off buying from Amazon and get Bosch condensers. They're just better. Hands down.

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

Yeah, I've got maybe twenty new ones in Ohio, but NEVER have had to use one on Morini or MInarelli even with tens of thousands of miles on the bikes.

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

Is there a difference between condensers for 6 and 12 volt vehicles?

Well, I'd use the correct voltage condenser, but it doesn't have to be unique for the ped .

I highly doubt any condenser difference , 6 or 12 volt .

The voltage for any given vehicle is determined not by the HT/ignition coil , but by the 'lighting' or system charging coil .

Condensers are simply a holding device for energy . They don't really care if it's a little or a lot , to a point , which is much higher than 6 or 12 volts

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

I looked it up and most say they are different and that a 6V might burn out more quickly or vice versa.

I'd stick with same voltage condenser, cause I am a `stick in the mud' when experimenting with my Morinis .LOL!

You have to remember that most probably don't really have a clue as to what they are talking about . The reference to burn out is most likely a wrong assumption drawn from running anything of a wrong voltage in any other system .

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

You may be right,PD.

Re: 1980 Vespa Ciao, wont stay running!

I've been running car condensers on my bikes for years. Cheap ones from auto parts stores tend to burn out after a bit, especially on piped bikes, but better ones, Bosch brand specifically, will last a long time.

I'd say brand is more important than voltage.
