Soldering Iron Recommendations

Hey all! (I hope I'm posting this in the right forum; totally fine with having it moved if this is the wrong place)

I'm looking for any soldering iron recommendations/advice y'all might have.

What I have in mind is to desolder a points & condenser ignition from one bike, solder it onto another, then install a CDI onto the first bike, as well as redo light wiring, install turn signals/relays, etc., so quite a bit of stuff I'd like to do.

What do you use to get these jobs done? I went to my local hardware store & the folks there didn't have much advice (I like their honesty), and only one or two cheaper irons to choose from.

Currently, I'm looking at the Weller WLC100 station, which seems great & pretty affordable, but I'm not sure if that will be as easy to work with, since that seems more designed for PCB work on a workbench, not on a bike that's a little further away from the electrical outlet?

I was thinking if I had a moped stand, I could rest the station on that stand to do work, but I don't have one just yet.

Anyway, thanks a lot! Really appreciate any advice/thoughts/suggestions! (edited)

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Can't go wrong with Weller. American Science and Surplus has a soldering station for 30 bucks. Good enough quality for occasional use and finer work. Buy one of those handy helper holder thingys with the alligator clips too. For larger joints you might need a higher wattage hand held gun. A station is preferable for most of watt you're doing.

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Agreed .

I've been using the same Weller gun for more than 40 years . New tips occasionally , of course .

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Weller soldering stations are very good, I still have my old one from my RC car racing days.

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Oh heck yeah, this is all great. Glad to read y’all have had good experiences with Weller stuff!

Would a 40w station be enough to do most of what I described?

Also, great idea to get one of the helping hand alligator clips!!

I’m thinking of copper braid to desolder as well.

I’ll see if my hardware store can order the iron I want before I go through Amazon.

Thanks again everyone!

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

As somebody who used to run a guitar pedal company, worked in computer repair, went through lots of electrical engineering course, and works on cars and bikes- i will never go back to an electric soldering iron

Butane torch with a soldering tip is the good life and its cheap

Hakko, use this for repairing theatrical and entertainment lighting at my day gig. Have been considering buying one for the shop in addition to the Snap-On butane model I have.

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

@Alex: Oh woah, I'm actually hoping to do pedal work, as well as amp, cab, & guitar work w/ this iron! Interesting that you're so anti-electric; can I ask why?

Also, what pedal company did you run?

@Hydra: Damn, that station is so nice! That's a bit out of my budget, but I really like it.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Called vertigoFX back in like 2008. Just sold stuff locally and rnd in the bedroom.

Electric guns are just not as good. As long as you have steady hands and you arent going to slip and burn a pcb, butane is much better for both speed and consistancy

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

You can use any soldering iron for the project your describing even a cheap one.

Id recommend getting mini clamps to hold everything in place while your soldering. Remember to use flux too. The low watt soldering irons take about 5 minutes to warm up and with really thick wire or cold weather it wont melt enough solder. I took a soldering class in school and all we used was the cheap irons. You will need an expensive soldering iron if you were micro solder repairing expensive computer chips, or wire less than 12 guage.

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

I've repaired everything from auto battery cable ends and gas tanks to computer mother boards and appliance control boards with my Weller 8200N .

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

i absolutely hate that style of iron. the tips are fragile and they work even worse than $5 pencil tip irons.

I bought a $10 Craftsman version of that on clearance from sears, i love it. great for when you have large wires to do, or for when you dont want to wait as they get hot instantly.

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Definitely Weller! Got 3 of them, similar to the one in the pic. Didn't pay a penny for any of them, they just needed simple repairs. Fast heating, with plenty of wattage to provide the heat for soldering larger items. Remember the wattage doesn't affect the temperature, just how capable it is of heating larger items. Try and get the old lead/tin solder with rosin flux core. modern lead-free solder is harder to use.

Personally, if it’s lead-free, i wouldn’t even consider the act of using it as soldering.

The added heat and time dicking around trying to get lead-free to flow can damage some sensitive electronics and melt the insulation from wiring, and still end up with a poor connection and the majority of it will most likely end up as little round balls and splatter stuck on the workbench.

60/40 rosin core, or 63/37 rosin core if you can find it. It just works.

Edit: I wouldn’t worry about the lead content, unless you enjoy licking solder, at which point, i’d recommend the lead-free. (edited)

I've had plenty of pencil type irons .

Which iron do I pick up before any other ? My Weller 8200N .

BTW , the tips are far from anything like fragile . Rather robust , to be honest .

Same here. Can put it down anywhere, heats up in seconds, and your only tether is your longest extension cord.

If you enjoy licking solder, lead poisoning is the least of your problems.

I never solder things, but we used one similar to what Adrian posted in school and i never had trouble with it.

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

I've been using this one for almost a full year and with good results.

^This. Alex knows the good shit. Never electric again...

Yup! Been using one for almost a year! great as a soldering iron, can take it anywhere! And you can set things on fire! No flash light to check for tank rust? No problem!

I'm really annoyed though because I lost my soldering tip.... Gota quick question. What solder and flux do yall recommend/

Got it at the swap meet for $5. Heats up fast. No more transformers for me. Produced in 1956, and sold for $3.97. Best gun ever.

I have a butane for mobile use in the shop, but I really like having an electric iron I can leave on and come back to. Never had an issue with losing temps, that's even soldering lug connections onto #1 and #0 theatrical wire

Re: Soldering Iron Recommendations

Dremel VersaTip. Butane.

PD I use to use my Dad’s like that when I was a kid. Love it worked so good. So when I got my own shop I bought a newer version.....Hated it. Broke in a month. Bought another one....same shit. Never heated well and eventually stopped working. I bought a $5 Walmart no name brand stick type years ago and it still works great for small wiring jobs. Also love using a butane one.....I should probably buy one they are great. (edited)

I guess that really doesn't surprise me . They just don't make stuff like they use to .
