78 Peugeot 103

The other day I bought an early Christmas present for myself. This 103, Its the u2 25 mph motor. It runs great and is quite easy on the eyes. It's only issue is the lights, the previous owner had installed the le partie cdi and removed the voltage regulator and never got around to dealing the lights. I am horrible with wiring. I was just curious if someone has a picture of how they wired the the lighting? I know the yellow plug from the magneto is for the lights. there are two sets of wires for lighting that plugged into the original points stator. I'm rather dyslexic and confused on wiring up a new voltage regulator and feeding power to the lights. I hope I didn't word anything confusing, and I truly appreciate any help on this bike!

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

A good start is to hook your yellow from the CDI to that double red. That should get you head and tail light. Hooking up the brakelight circuit is going to be more difficult. Just get the headlight and tail going first.

Do you have a way to test bulbs to tell if they are any good.

Also if your headlight is the stock 6v sealed beam I dont recommend using it with the lapartie at full riding RPM with out a voltage regulator. It will pop.

It's ok for just doing your wiring at an idle though.

Do these tasks and check back.

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

The way that bike looks bone stock and beautiful If it was me I would find a stack stator plate points ignition and put it back on before all those pretty wires get all carved up. The stock ignitions ate not all bad and I have only seen 2 out of 50 bikes that were faulty.

They are not hard to find and then you could have the stock cover back on the ignition.

So beautiful.

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

From the location of your bike you posted do you think you night have a drinking problem?

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

when the stock points ignition was replaced with the motobecane stock cdi you instantly lost your brake light circuit. what you need to do is get an inexpensive voltage resulator/ rectifier from treatland.tv for under 10 dollars. this particular one has one inlet from the cdi and the far two connectors are 12 volt outlets, one can be used for the headlight and parking light circuits and the other can be used for the brake light circuit. and when you do this, you will need to replace the handlebar brake switches for the ones with the black button also from treatland.tv. good luck and stay well.

I must ask... Where did you ever find that Beautiful, still chrome covors? All of mine are scratched to hek'n painted silver ish. Looks like trash, which is why I haven't put them on. I do however enjoy the look of my polished brass

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

Ha. Josiah, It is just a stock one that I Buffed out on a jeweler wheel.

^Miguel...which voltage reg are you referring to? I've been meaning to hook up my brakes for 2 years but haven't wanted to start hacking up the wiring to leech off the light circuit...if you could point out which regulator you're talking about I might actually regain my brakes (already have the different brake switches too!)

thx

Kasey Sinning /

Hey Matt, I am currently at this stage as well, did you ever figure out which regulator to use? Or do you know if just a two wire regulator could be split between the brakes and lights? Thanks man

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

I think any regulator would work,

the trick is changing out to the "other" brake switches and rewiring that front harness so it runs hot to the brake switches and onto brake light bulb instead of thru ext ig ground.

just do it method:

1. find spot for regulator on frame, scratch paint off and bolt it on.

2. plug yellow from stator to first spot

2a. switch brake switches to normally off switches. both sides (or just do one side if you lazy and wire for that one side only but the brake light will light up only if you switch that one side which could be a problem or not, your call)

3. open up tail light and combine tail light ground and brake light ground.

4. send power from 2,3, or 4 prong to both brake light switches (cut and solder og harness)

5. now from the other side of switches, connect together and to positive on brake light bulb

note. all the wiring is there, it just has to be reconfigured. good luckk

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

kasey, nope I haven't bothered yet...been working on led's on my moby but I'm interested in what pat splat said about reconfiguring the existing wiring...so, pat, in step 2 you say yellow plug from stator yo first spot? first spot where? the regulator?

then in step 4 you say send power from 2,3, or 4 prong to brake switches...like the 2,3,4 on a regulator? confused...would you have pics of what wires you're referring too?

I really suck bad at electrics but i'm getting there and trying to learn...i'd love to get these brake lights working again...

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

im still mystified on how a regulator works.(just pick any till it reads appropriately)

step 2. power up the regulator: wire stator to first spot on regulator

once regulator is powered up.

step 4. now you have 3 empty choices on regulator..., pick one and split to brake switches.

or narrow it down with a running motor and a voltage tester out in fresh air.

good luck just do it.

Re: 78 Peugeot 103

thx man...that helps!
