QT50 voltage regulator

My second qt50 didn't have a voltage regulator on it when I go it. I took the one off my old one but there was no wire to hook up to it. I pulled apart the old wiring harness and traced the wire all the way back to where it was spliced together. Can I just cut the old one off and splice it with the other one? Is there a certain point it needs to be at?
