Any tips on Tomos A3 Condenser removal and installation?

Ned Renner /

On my '91 Bullet the condenser is held in by tight friction through a hole in the stator plate. I got it out by removing the plate and tapping it out from the back with a socket and hammer. Soaked it with WD40 before the attempt . This resulted in some damage where the socket pressed the rear of the old condenser. Am a bit Leary about forcing in the new unit using the reverse of this method. There must be a less violent way. Any tips from experience?

Maybe mount the new condenser outside the stator .

or sand the hole.

I'd feel a lot better knowing that the condenser wasn't going to possibly pop out of it's hole and cause any damage . Seems the external mount would be a lot better .

im not saying sand a grand canyon! just till u gott tap it in, isnt there a set screw bracket thing too. some people like their electronics tucked away.

External mount like a pro, or put it back inside like a dummy and have to struggle-bus through the same operation in the future.

Maybe so , but , tucked away dictates higher heat . Heat is the enemy of electronics .

So , if the owner doesn't mind having to do the job more than once ... I mean , if there is a next time kinda thing . ;)

Thanks for the ideas, will consider an external placement but not my first choice. Think the designer had it right with keeping it inside. Looking for what Tomos did to put it in. Will report back with final solution.

Just remember that the designer was human , too . ;)

Not all things designed by others are perfect .

a note: i admit it, it much easier to add switch out externally than under the covers, aircooled too

Corresponded with a recognized moped repair service and the accepted practice is to tap it in with socket and hammer, being sure pressure is going to the outer shell. Used a little water based lube to ease the friction, water evaporates so it will be a tight dry ground. Most condenser capacitors have an external metal band and screw to attach and ground, great method. The Tomos A3 uses the compression fit. Looked up heat as a factor in condenser/capacitor failure and found no reports of heat as a cause. Moisture could cause a short. Bosch condensers seem to have have fewer failures than some others, slightly different internal design. In short, if you have external, stay with it, if internal do the same. If you elect to change to an external, keep the positive contact away from where water could collect. Thanks to all for your feedback, it is great to hear back when you are problem solving.
