NU50M Chewing Drive Belt

Guillermo Payet /

I recently got a 1982 Honda Urban Express, (which was garaged for 15 years) and installed a BX31 drive belt in it. Only about 300 miles later I opened the crankcase cover and found lots of what looks like finely ground up rubber. I measured the belt's width, and it's down to 32 mm from the original 36.6 mm width! I took out the clutch and variometer plates for inspection, and indeed, one of the "driven face" plates is a bit pitted and rusty. Could this be what's chewing up the belt so quick?
