Right lads and lasses,

I have split the tank and the frame!

as always you learn along the way!

Hi have taken a few pics so you can see the offening bike and right up to the point of extracting the tank. it never went as planned but i will let you know what i would have done differantly.

i still plan to try a repair and will take you along for the ride as i go.

this was after i finally knocked out the lower section of the tank.

i later realised that i had to grind the top and bottom seam to release it from the rear frame section.

1508335296995.jpg

then knock it out from the only avaible access point

there it is coming out of the rear frame.

if i were to do it again i wouldnt cut at the weld i would cut just to the rear of the ewld and grind the top and bottom.

the top and bottom grind are nessasary as the tank and rears body section slip into each other and are welded togeather at the same time.

here it is now out of the rear frame and it is now soaking in hydrochloric acid to remove all of the rust and hopefully expose any other holes and reall rusty bits.

ill let you know the outcome shortly.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Yes!!!!! Do this

Im having a bloody good go.

Just letting the acid do it's thing.

Be updating shortly

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

That tank doesn't even look bad...

I would have just used evapo rust, and some red kote to seal any pinholes.

Either way good on ya for trying something new. Hope it goes back together ok!

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

carry on

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

This is amazing. Hell, I would have just said fuck it and got another Maxi frame.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Martin Latham /

I had previously tipped hydrochloric acid in there to eat the rust that's why it doesn't look to bad. The upper half is worse.

I have just removed the lower section Of The tank from the acid bath.

It is a bit pitted and a couple of extra holes have shown up, but nothing I don't think we can fix.

You can see the holes with the light behind it.

I noticed you have a mb-5? I had one of them as my second moped when I was 16. Intact I lost my ring finger on it lol.

I had a mb-5 and my mate had the mt-5!

They were good old days

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Never knew what these looked like inside. Had no idea it went so far down and straight back at the bottom of the tank.

Explains why the bottom toward the rear wheel is such a collection area for rust chunks, etc.

Is this in the metal dumpster yet?

Sometimes I send my mom texts in all caps too, but she doesn’t reply. Instead someone else texts me back saying wrong number and I remember my mom is dead and then I think about the harsh reality of the world. Would love to see the progress on this maxi though.

I'm dreading the day this happens to my ped , i wouldn't of gone to this trouble though , I'll be interested in how it all comes out :)

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

This is fun. I've cleaned out a lot of them before but never cut them apart. Nice even cut too! I would have just cut a three sided flap open up higher and cleaned it out, then welded it the flap back close. But I can't help think how this would look lowered and stretched. Those are fun bikes to work on and were made so well. This should work but if it doesn't just put a mini tank in the bottom half, and make a cool storage area out of the top half. Keep the pictures coming. Many thanks.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

I'm not an expert but puch didn't install the tanks like that. That tank was inserted as a whole before joining s the two halfs. I really think what you did was actually a horrible idea and there was not needed for it but it still looks interesting.

Tank is not apart of the frame it was integrated into the frame*

right guys

sorry for not getting back sooner. work has been keeping me busy and have had no time at all.

i have welded the bottom of the tank back on and left it filled with hydrochloric acid and water to remove any other rust for a few weeks it seems like.

it appers to have cleaned it quite well but i still have a few small holes which need sorting out.

i have now got a new lock up too and my welding gear is now there so i will need to move things around.

i have no internet there either so will have to do works and then update on here.

ive got a few new pics but hope to do some more work over the weekend.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

you are dead right.

if i had known the construction of the frame i would have don the cut to the reat of the weld and top and bottom of the weld there the two sides are brought together.

we learn through mistakes.

i am trying to work with what i have now. i will brobably have to weld some extra steel to the bottom of the tank/frame area to stop it coming apart.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Do you think the original rust damage was done by Alcohol Gasoline being left in the tank?

Are you going to coat the tank when your done with the welds and patches?

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Martin Latham /

i think the rust was probibly caused by condensation of water inside the tank.

i might coat the tank? i probibly should as ive acid etched it now?

this bike was last on the road in 1994 from what the tax disc says and i dont know if there was alchol added into fuel back then.?

the holes appeer to be more like worm hole rather than a general thinning of the steel.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

FYI I would coat the tank as stated above. After all the work you have done after etching it will rust like a big dog in a matter of minutes. It's called Flash Rusting.

I separate the Alcohol from our crappy gas to try to keep my tanks clear or rust and prevent the attack on the aluminum carbs.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Martin Latham /

do you have any back yard ways to coat the tank without having to buy expensive named stuff?

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Sorry,no. Gas is a solvent as well as having detergents in it. Any paint would not last at all.

The tank coatings are the only way to go.

Re: puch maxi tank new repair idea as it happens... with pics. part 1

Martin Latham /

do you know what tank coatings are made of?
