Puch maxi leaking oil from the top of the exhaust manifold

Chris Walker /

My puch maxi is leaking oil from the top of the exhaust manifold, where the exhaust goes into the engine. Any ideas?

Remove the two front exhaust mounting nuts.

Remove the rear exhaust mounting bolt.

Remove the exhaust and see whats happening up there.

Could be a bad gasket

Could just be loose header nuts but I'm sure you'd figure that out in step 1

I checked the gasket earlier and it seems fine also those bolts are very tight but not too tight as I don't want to break my studs. With a bit of oil coming out would it do the bike any harm?

No just cosmetic...but get a nice fresh new crush gasket and get it right...

Will do. So I don't run the risk of it seizing or anything? It's not spewing oil out it's just drooling a bit but nothing drastic.

No it won't sieze.

It's just unburned oil making its way out of the motor and into exhaust.

Normally I'm not one to use gasket sealers, but I've had the same problem on a couple of my peds and got sick of the oil spots even when using new gaskets. I've been using this copper coat stuff with great success on reused head gaskets and exhaust gaskets. Leaks disappeared and I was able to reuse gaskets several times. A little goes a long way.

Do you think firegum exhaust sealant will work? Just rub it on the header then tighten it to seal it. I'm not sure if you guys have firegum over in the states.
