Honda Spree will not start when cold

Russell Nicely /

I am working on a 1986 Honda Spree. I have gotten rid of the oil injection and now using premix. The bike runs absolutely perfect, carb is clean, compression is good, no problems whatsoever with the way it runs. The problem is if the bike gets colder than say 55 degs it will not start! It turns over fine, but will not start. I can put it in my basement which is usually like 65degs and let it sit in there, and warm up, and it will start as soon as you hit the button. I thought it might be the electric choke, so I replaced it, and that made no difference. Thought maybe someone could give me some advise

you are not getting power to the choke.

Did you measure voltage first before you replaced it?

In the float bowl there is a wall separating the main gas reservoir from the small reservoir where the tube for the enrichening circuit picks up its fuel. At the base of this wall is a hole where fuel passes from the main reservoir to the small reservoir. If this hole is blocked, no extra gas can get to the enrichening circuit for cold starts. When you cleaned the carb did you make sure this hole was clear?

I did not check the voltage. What would cause it not to have power? I did check the fuses that I could find.....

I think he likes it......

I know exactly what you are talking about! I worked on getting that clean, and gave up on it. I knew there was a reason for it to be there, but did not quite understand what it was doing. I worked on it for a while and moved on. I don't think I can get it cleaned out. do they make replacement carburetors for it? I'm sure Honda has gave up on parts for this scooter

Do you have any advise on how to clear the passage? If I remember correctly, it has a turn in it, which makes it very difficult to get something to go through it. I looked on eBay, and there is replacement carbs for around $80. I'm not a big fan of the cheap replacement junk, but it appears to be the only thing out there. Just curious if anyone has had any luck with them?

Use a small guitar string and jam it through a few times .

The hole I'm talking about (at the base of the wall) is straight through - no turn.

I dip carbs in carb cleaner for 24 hours, then poke a wire through.

That was it! Cleaned the hole out and it starts better than it ever has.....thanks for the advise!

Re: Honda Spree will not start when cold

Sprees are cool, i like mine.

fiberglass the body panels, and then they last for ever.
