How to clean carb parts?

Recently I received a carburettor in parts and petcocks from 50CC JAWA moped from 1957-1963. The parts are all of aluminium, with a lot of dirt and sand on it.

How to clean it roughly the best way?

To soak them in soap water? Or in water wit lemon acid?

Re: How to clean carb parts?

Ultrasonic with a splash of pinesol works wonders .You can buy an ultrasonic cleaner at HF for 50 if this is something you will do often .If not a little wire brush to clean the housing then pull a wire out of a wire wheel or brush to run through the jets .Make sure they are clean .Blast with carb clean

Re: How to clean carb parts?

You can also make A sonic cleaner with a plastic container and one of those square hand sanders. Just strap it to the plastic container with ratchet strap or duck tape turn it on. it'll help and you can usually find a square Sanders for 20 bucks

Actually try one so you know it works? I don't trust most stuff on ebay

Re: How to clean carb parts?

avoid any acid.

it melts aluminum.

a bucket of water, with a bit of TSP, and set it on top of the washing machine or dryer when doing your loads of wash.

Re: How to clean carb parts?

I saw where m.e.k. worked well. The stuff is very toxic though.

Simmer in a crock pot with antifreeze for a few hours. Ethylene glycol.

Is it a good idea to put the parts into a dishwasher?

Go grab a bottle of antifreeze.....most are made of ethylene glycol (the green or blue stuff). Yes your house will smell like a radiator shop.

Re: How to clean carb parts?

Yea that is the one I own >2L Sounds like its a lot but it really isn't that much, its enough space to fit a puch head in it . If you restore stuff its a awesome tool .Rip it down doss al your nuts bolts and bits in and run it at high heat full wave for 35 min and your good .Rubber can go in ,plastic ,screens whatever ...If you really just want to clean your bing carb than just go with the guitar string and carb clean .When I was a kid I would dump all the metal parts in a ball mason Jar and fill it with lacquer thinner and let it sit for a few days if it was really dirty.

I do not believe putting parts on a sander or washing machine is the same as an ultrasonic cleaner. I have the HF heated ultrasonic cleaner and like it a lot.

In an ultrasonic cleaner, the object to be cleaned is placed in a chamber containing a suitable solution (in an aqueous or organic solvent, depending on the application). In aqueous cleaners, surfactants (e.g., laundry detergent) are often added to permit dissolution of nonpolar compounds such as oils and greases. An ultrasound generating transducer built into the chamber, or lowered into the fluid, produces ultrasonic waves in the fluid by changing size in concert with an electrical signal oscillating at ultrasonic frequency. This creates compression waves in the liquid of the tank which ‘tear’ the liquid apart, leaving behind many millions of microscopic ‘voids’ or ‘partial vacuum bubbles’ (cavitation). These bubbles collapse with enormous energy; temperatures and pressures on the order of 5,000 K and 20,000 lbs per square inch are achieved;[6][7] however, they are so small that they do no more than clean and remove surface dirt and contaminants. The higher the frequency, the smaller the nodes between the cavitation points, which allows for cleaning of more intricate detail.

Re: How to clean carb parts?

Way to science that, Cadillac!

It makes sense that true ultrasonic cleaning means more than just shaking the bucket of water....

Re: How to clean carb parts?

I'm sorry I should've specified that it is not actually an ultrasonic cleaner more like agitator cleaner but if you leave the parts in there for two or three hours in a solution of 50/50 water C.L.R it will help to remove old gas lacquer and other corrosion's from parts I usually

I've been using an ultrasonic unit, for several years, and this year started using Ethylene Glycol in it, for carbs. I will agree that it works well. No matter what method you use, you must double check all the orifices to make sure they're clear.
