Fairing removal problem, 1995 Tomos Targa LX

Ned Renner /

Thought this would be easy but am missing something. Need to replace the headlight bulb and it seems the fairing must come of first. Have seen a reference to two screws holding it on and it slides off but mine has two threaded bolt ends sticking through the fairing from the inside out with cap nuts on the outside. The fairing is brittle plastic and the prior owner seems to have attempted the job but only cracked the plastic.

Once the cap nuts and washers come off pull one side of the fairing over the stud, and then do the other side. The plastic should have enough flex to make it. If the fairing is already cracked, reinforce the area around the holes with a square of fiberglass.

Yep. They get brittle and crack. Good idea to fiberglass over the area to reinforce the plastic and then repaint the fairing.

Researched a bit on plastics and aging, UV exposure, exposure to cold weather and age all contribute to added brittleness. Decided to use a Dremel to cut slots that should allow the fairing to slide forwards and off, then do some reinforcing. Thanks to both of you. Will report how this goes.

Dremel method described earlier worked for the two lateral cuts on each side to create the new slots. The plastic piece of the new slot snapped right off but the metal backing plate , even though cut laterally, was hard to get to, there is very little space to work in. Be sure to cut the slots deep enough that the stud is free to move through the slot once you bend the backing plate tab until it breaks off.. Will safety wire the new slot openings so fairing can't accidentally move forward. A lot to go through to get to a lamp bulb.

Between the difficulty described and the frankly: ugly cosmetics of the headlight and fairing many TOMOS owners, myself included, opt for changing the headlight bucket to something that takes a #1156 bulb that can be had for around $1. Check around for a CEV Tipo 105 or can even use something from a Peugeot, Motobecane or General if you keep the speedo in the black plastic dash

Thanks, will give this serious thought. Am almost afraid to look up the priice of this fancy looking bulb.
