Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

Been working on getting my 81 Kreidler back on the road. I go it running but it was very slow off the start and hard shifting. I pulled the side cover off and it looks like both my clutches are toast. I assume there is supposed to be clutch material on both these where the orange material is? It looks like these are near impossible to find. Is there a way to reline these? I am very close to giving up on it.

Re: Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

You can fix that.

Do a little searching to find the correct cork and glue and 4 cable ties and you'll have it fixed. I'd tell you but I'm unsure of the technical stuff and would want to steer you wrong.

Don't give up.

Is this the orange flory with a PBR can Muffler baffle?

Re: Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

^nope, his a mp19, it's well worth its effort.

I had an MP19 once. Sweet little moped. But I had the same problem, way before the internet, and never got it fixed.

Re: Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

Got'cha covered here with good clutches. Would like your old cores though; Decker is going to have some relined with super tough material to handle his build, maybe get these redone with them too.

Re: Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

dude, they all have the tough shifter shakes.

just double up on tranny fluid

Re: Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

But there is absolutely no liners on Brian's clutches. Shifty shakes are an easy fix; just cut a cover gasket out of thinner stock, test & shim correctly, fill fluid to proper level and done.

Re: Kreidler clutches gone? About to give up on it.

Thanks to Schmiddy for hooking me up with 2 clutches. I installed them yesterday and was out cruising all afternoon. The thinner gasket and shims he sent as well worked out perfect. It shifts perfect with absolutely no shakes at all and pulls hard off the line now.

I made the puller that shelly from vintagemopeds.net wrote up. Works perfect and cost only $1.67 to make. The tricky part is reinstalling the clutches. I didn't have the special tool but rigged something up with a long m8 bolt and nut with washers. This is the real tricky part as you need to get the spacing on these just right. I pushed them on until they rubbed each other and then pulled them out very slightly. Tested and had to adjust them again. The key is getting it to idle without the wheel spinning I think.

Also, I had oil leaking out of the top clutch lever and when I had it apart I found there was a 20 x 2.5 o ring in there that was shot. Replaced that and no more leaks.

Now that the engine/tranny are good I am going to move on to more restoration work.

Bet your glad you didn't give up. Nice work!
