1978 Honda express How do I set the timing?

Can someone tell me in detail how to set the timing I have the manual and it says set it at the F mark but when I turn my fly wheel to F my points are closed do I just open them and set the anyways? I seen videos on YouTube but those videos don't go by the F mark they just opened the points to their widest point and set it from there that didn't seem correct to me but that's why I'm asking for help on the subject also what's the correct point gap considering my spark plug is gapped at .27

Re: 1978 Honda express How do I set the timing?

Set the point gap with the points at their widest, wherever it happens to be. Gap specs are in the manual. The F mark is the moment the points open, which will obviously be far less than the actual set gap. The manual details how to set up a light to identify when the points are closed before the F mark but open just at the mark causing spark. (edited)

my bike was running like crap and as someone on here told me.. to do this.. take side cover off.. look at points - they may be loose like mine and use the cardboard from a cereal box top.. its the same as the right gap.. put inside the gap and close and tighten bolts.. that did it for me....
