need advice for a tomos a35 1999 targa lx no power ?

I just purchased this bike out oftheblue from someone with no mechanical knowledge. I recently fixed the bike up, I changed gear oil spark plug, cleaned the exhaust port , also cleaned the fuel supply and the air filter. I noticed there was no head gasket.everything on the bike is stock. In second gear it hesitates also holes were made in the air filter box and I noticed it blows out. I also noticed the adjustment screw on the carburetor doesn't change anything. Also I noticed the baffle tube in the stock exhaust is missing. Any tips or guidance would be appreciated thanks oh also the bike reads over4000 miles possible defective tachometer? I havnt verified that but never the less it's an older bike.

If the idle screw doesn't do anything, you've probably got air leaks somewhere. You can check by spraying carb cleaner at the gasket interfaces (cylinder/head, intake/cylinder, case/cylinder, etc) while the bike is running to see if the bike either stalls or stumbles.

If you're getting blow by, could be worn piston rings, I believe, though I've not experienced it myself.

Fix both issues and it should get you some more power.

So if I understand the carb cleaner test is to check for proper seal (gasket).that's issue 1, and the term blow by is issue 2? I will try try that test tomorrow. Thanks Jonathan

Yeah if you've got air leaks where the gaskets are supposed to seal, you'll get a loss of power. Every used moped I've ever bought has had air leaks, usually solved with a torque wrench.

Hi Don when I got it I drained a horrible black liquid I have the manual wich recommends Atf type a, wich I couldn't find I then got castrol Atf synthetic. I rinsed the the gearbox with fresh ,drained it then topped it up as per instruction s.

clean it out again, the blackness of the liquid would suggest that the clutch shoes are worn out. no metal in it i hope, that, or silverish particulates would indicate the second speed return spring was eaten and screwed the gearset to some extent.

refill with gear differential oil, puking out the carb suggests a bad ringset.

check for oil streaks on the piston sides or do a compression check. the extra holes are because he took out the silencer/baffle. odds are he also put a larger jet in there.

I will do the oil change today thanks. Yes there was metallic particles in the first drainage. I expected that tho, with the bad maintenance. Thanks for the help looks like I will need new rings probably,if I choose to keep it stock.

um, reeds motor, shouldn't be blowing out the carb, could you clarify what "it blows out" means?

could be as simple as damaged reeds needing replacing

Just changed the gear oil and tightened some loose Allen bolts on the intake . Did the carb spray check seemed ok.test run, I went for a ride I noticed much better performance in the tranny. Same effect I was wearing shorts and could feel the air blowing out of the holes in the airbox. On a straight road with slight wind I also weigh 180 I was able to go average 25+miles an hour at that speed it would hesitate Now the next question is should I be riding the bike. Also the bike smokes at the beginning. Thanks everyone in advance

Re: need advice for a tomos a35 1999 targa lx no power ?

So you only put 10 oz. of oil in the tranny, right? Don't overfill it!Let it drain back out the check screw until it stops with the bike level on the stand. don-ohio (:^)

Hi Don I did that, I bought the best quality, I even had time to research reed valve and examined my own it was crooked but seemed functional I straightened it out and reassembled it, after turning over I was playing with throttle screw and idling screw seemed functional. Test ride coming up.

i would at the very least inspect the clutch, caseside support bearings and gearsets for damage.

Slew foot thats what I'm talking about a good teardown. When are you available to help me with this. Lol, I assume there is damage because the previous owners lack of moped respect. I think I have run out of options with the stock bike . I will consider performance upgrades.

I went for a ride last night bike ran great after warming up,shifted up and down much better. In second gear it would reach 25+mile an hour avg certain occasions reached 30+ .I noticed better idling when stopped at red light in higher speeds I still noticed air blowing out of the air box I will leave a pic of that

I didn't see where you had checked to see if exhaust needs decoking? That will slow `em down. I did see where you cleared the exhaust port. don-ohio

Hey Don that would be a great idea it's missing the baffle when I took it off it drained out oil,I checked out the technique for doing this, my neighbors wouldn't be impressed. Lol maybe I should just upgrade my exhaust.
