Is a chain tensioner needed

I am having a difficult time with the smaller bike chain tensioner on a Puch Newport. Is that needed? What would be the problem with just shortening the chain and removing the tensioner completely.

Re: Is a chain tensioner needed

The main thing is that its hard to do that if you are adjusting for both the drive chain and the pedal chain as they'll be off by different amounts. The pedal chain tensioner allows you to get the drive chain adjustment correct while keeping the pedal chain acceptably taut.

What is a good tension to use

Re: Is a chain tensioner needed

Enough tension that it keeps the chain tight without enough slack to jump off the sprockets.

Describe the difficult time you are having ?

Attached is file of a picture of one complete.

Is yours complete ?

Is the bar shaped like the one in the picture or is it bent out of shape ?

I like to imagine I'm being stalked by rabid tigers, and my moped is the only way to escape.
