drive chain popping off

hey guys gotta puch newport and my drive chain keeps flying off, i've been riding it for months and it just starting doing this a couple days ago. i've just been putting it back on and going but its starting to get more frequent, should i remove a link or something? any advice is helpful thanks

Re: drive chain popping off

Can't ya loosen the rear wheel and pull it back to tighten the drive chain? Are the bolts that tighten the rear wheel loose. You are describing a not safe condition.

Re: drive chain popping off

yea pretty unsafe.... umm i didn't even think of the rear wheel. i'll check that out right now thanks

Is it coming off because it's loose, or because your wheel is cocked? Either way, figure it out before you keep riding, that problem can kill you.

Re: drive chain popping off

If it's the two nuts that are loose go with one of the nuts to the hardware store and buy

1.) suitable lock washer for both sides

2) some red lock tiite.

Have a friend help to pull the wheel back and tighten the chain and you to tighten the nuts. It's probably a metric 17 mm wrench. So you need either two or one and a 17 mm socket(one for each side) . Don't use a vice grip as you will chew up the nut and learn to regret that. The chain usually has say a 1/2 " of movement if you press on it (that's slack)

Do not ride this bike until you figure this all out.

Duh, duh, duh,duh-duh....

Re: drive chain popping off

yea i got gazelles so i try not mess too much with the wheel once i get it into place because of the tight fit. but yes it definitely was loose. i tightened it up nice and good, ran it on the stand for while just be sure it wouldn't fly off again and that i wasn't rubbing the wheel. thanks again

Re: drive chain popping off

Good. You got that chain tensioned right? Too tight you ruin the trannie. Too loose you lose your leg!

Re: drive chain popping off

measure it for length, they elongate and ride up in the gears, 1 foot should be 24 links i believe, 1" = 2 links.

also crusty rusty stiff chains are trouble overall.

Re: drive chain popping off

Buy a park chain measuring tool if you are worried about a too worn chain. It should work on a 415 or 420 chain.
