Found crack on upper fork plate, will welding it be reliable in long run?

Better off digging up a new plate if you can. You could weld it, but its a little thin to hold up well.

Re: Cracing upper fork plate

That looks scary to me... If you must weld it, see if you can bend a piece of steel rod to fit in the back/bottom for strength.

That top plate is easily replaceable, a shouldn't cost you much. Otherwise drill the end of the crack and weld it.

Re: Cracing upper fork plate

One i have is prior 1980 its rare, newer one from 1980+ is different.

See that piece that connects hand to plate i have old design (forgot to mention its cracking too).

Can someone confirm if all i need to fit newer design fork plate to old frame is this piece that holds wheel or need more work?

Re: Cracing upper fork plate

So i should learn it hard way or someone knows if newer upper fork plate fits old fork?

Learn the hard way. odds are it will fit.

Re: Cracing upper fork plate

I would weld it. As long as you're going 30 it should be fine.

Re: Cracing upper fork plate

^depends on your welds too.

I would absolutely weld it. and i'm not very good. I would also without hesitation get a replacement newstyle one just to know if it fit and also have a backup.
