1982 Honda Urban Express Headlight unit/rim

Cesar Lizarraga /

Hi,

I have a 1982 Honda Urban Express. The previous owners had rigged up a headlight with a 12v 55w Bosch Halogen light. It was taped on with red tape and the wiring inside was a mess. After fixing it, I realized that the headlight was not the initial unit.

I am trying to find the rim for the headlight unit because as far as I can tell most OEM online stores have the headlight unit available just not the rim that connects it to the other part.

So in this diagram:

http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model_years/171-honda-1982-urban-express-nu50/assemblies/3371-headlight-headlight-case

So #1, I need #2 and all its attendant screws, as well as #6 and all its attendant screws.

As it is, buying a used one off of Ebay is somewhere around $50.

Is there A. a cheaper way to get this or B. just mod a new light onto #15 that is good and works with the hi-lo/dimmer switch?

Thanks.

fuck the initial unit

I'd just bang in any old light, those stock ones look silly anyway, you can wire in some cheap ones ore lotsa different things. 50 bucks for a headlight is silly to me.

but then again, i've used soupcans for headlights.

i like the soup can idea! on the urban its side mount so you could bolt two cans side by side hmmmm

Oh wow, I mean lacking anything better I can see that being an option but...wow.

Re: 1982 Honda Urban Express Headlight unit/rim

there's so much room in that jacked up tubing square between the bars and the front face thing you can get some ears and mount up whatever you want.

seriously though a 6" round headlamp would look cool I've been looking around for one myself, thats a real option youll just have to rewire the cutoff switch to be your ignition on/off switch I cant stand the ebay inflated prices on some stuff for these bikes i dont think I have an extra but I'll check my garage is trashed with urban stuff Im trying to piece together one maybe a trade? I need a rear cable

Thanks. Unfortunately, i do not have a rear cable hanging around. I barely have enough parts for this one. So far, I've decided to bypass the dimmer switch (Hi/Lo) and am figuring out ways to make it act as On/Off.

why? on/off for headlight? use the blue wire(hi) and use the green where it normally goes and dont use the white (lo), this way the blue (hi) will be your on and when you put the switch for low it will be turned off

Eh I mean I could have it always on as well. Just figured I might as well make the switch do SOMETHING.

yeah I had to change all my headlights over to a replacable bulb due to all burning out or whatever and Im not willing to pay 60 or more $'s for a sealed beam. I went with a single filament so I wired it up as I posted and that way you can leave it on, turn it off. Is that what your talking about a headlight on/off?

I have a rear cable for an express but don't know for what year though dude

Re: 1982 Honda Urban Express Headlight unit/rim

There are so many things you can do. You can pretty much buy any 'ol headlight that fits the dimensions and mount it. If you like to OEM look then get a bulb, 55w a ch cheapo halogen and put it in the OEM lens. you can do a wiki search on the how-to's on this. On one Express I have a high beam bulb to the high/low switch works like an on/off witch.

Hey foxfire - what kind of pipe is on that black urban?

Re: 1982 Honda Urban Express Headlight unit/rim

Yeah, I just wired it to do the On/Off thing. So, yeah, that's exactly what I was talking about. Also, yeah never had the OEM headlight in the first place the one I have now is fine but I gotta figure out a way to attach it to the bucket since it's just a housing unit for the bulb without any brackets around it.

Sorta looks like the OEM unit without the rim.

Also, what FoxFire S did is awesome. What all did that involve? I mean jesus, fitting all that wiring into another headlight case just seems insane.

plent of room with a CEV bullet headlight. but foxfire did it right-- did you simply just drill a hole for the ignition switch?

Re: 1982 Honda Urban Express Headlight unit/rim

Headlight is off ebay from Demoncycle (39.99). Drilled a hole in the steering stem nut to attach the headlight. Drilled a hole for the key/ignition(measure twice, cut once) Haven't yet but there is room on top for the high beam/turn/oil lights and wiring. Had to enlarge the hole on bottom to fit the Urbans wires and connectors into the housing. The hole is the shape/size for the 7 wire(?) connector. There is room inside for all the wiring and connectors plus some. The pipe is a CIH Racing Pipe (stamped on the pipe). Got off ebay too. Someone said it's a scooter pipe but fits perfect with just cutting off the header, turning it, and rewelding. High rpm pipe, no hit. With my set-up it pulls from 35-55 mph topping out at around 62 (gps). The attached is of it on the grey Urban.

Stay away from this guy, H.M. Murdock is really Spartafoxilover and is bad news.

Re: 1982 Honda Urban Express Headlight unit/rim

With a bit of tweaking, this is what I was able to install on my Nc50.

A light housing from Europe with a 35W, 6V, H4 Halogen bulb.

A 300% lumen increase from the original 15W filament bulb.

I think the Nu50's run on 12V ???? ....It should be even easier.

There are a lot of 65W, 12V, H4 bulb available at $12.
