Converting points to cdi, 80' honda express

Ive searched the performance and repair forums with out much results. I have an 80' Honda express NC50, If I install an 81' stator, install a cdi, match the wiring up ( I've compared the wiring diagrams for the two years, looks very doable), add a ground to the engine from the cdi, ground the coil to the frame, use a battery from an 81', would it work? This was a parts bike and was missing the stator

should. I have swapped cdi engines into points frames. If I remember right I just matched wire colors and it was plug and play. I have never swapped just the ignition set-ups but only whole motors.

Curious if you got this to work, my capacitor died on my 79. I was wondering what CDI box you decided to use also?

Thanks

I chose to stay with points. sorry I’m not much help. It was just an easier option at the time. Express is still running strong though.

Miracles do happen . ;)

Re: Converting points to cdi, 80' honda express

In case anyone else dredges this up from the depths, the battery does not have anything to do with the CDI actually functioning aside from the jumper in the plug to kill the box if you pull the battery. Converting one bike to the other will have no such jumper.

Dredging here. I converted a '78 nc50 to CDI. I put the '78 engine on an '81 frame and took the '81 stator, flywheel and flywheel retaining ring and put them on the '78 engine. You need to transfer all of those items as the '78 flywheel and flywheel retaining ring won't work with the '81 stator. Timing will be way off. I, of course, used the Honda CDI that came with the '81 Express.
