JB weld and gas?

I'm having trouble finding a used carb to replace the buggered PHVA 14mm on my A55, so I'm thinking about experimenting with a little JB weld and a dremel to try to at least get the bike up and running for a while.

For those of you that haven't seen:

Here is the damage to the carb...

I want to use the JB weld to make the lip of the carb look like this:

And the dremel to fix the inside of the carb body.

So, how does JB weld hold up when exposed to gasoline?

Any alternative ideas for how to repair this type of carb damage? I looked around the wiki for some kind of guide to carb porting but didnt see anything for this type of thing. Words of wisdom on technique with the dremel?

Re: JB weld and gas?

I may have found a used carb- any reason I cant run the PHVA model with the oil injection vent even if I am not going to use oil injection?

Re: JB weld and gas?

as long as the oil injection has a port in the intake pipe any carb will do.

jb weld will hold up to gas but that may be asking a lot out of it. no sense not to try, though a new carb would be best.

Re: JB weld and gas?

Official Website

"When fully cured, J-B Weld is completely resistant to water, gasoline, and about every other petroleum product or automotive chemical."

Re: JB weld and gas?

Thanks Colin and Shawn- I think I will try to fix what I have but will eventually get a new carb.

Re: JB weld and gas?

I'd run it as-is and just make sure it has a good seal. Use sealant around the rubber coupling if you have too. Jb-weld in an area like that won't have any strength and might just break off, get ingested and damage your engine. (edited)

Re: JB weld and gas?

Grey, That's a good point about the JB breaking off and messing things up...

Do you think the scoring/ scratching inside the bore of the carb will affect how it runs?

Re: JB weld and gas?

I would suggest to make a ring of cheapo tin to go inside the cracked end of the carb and then use the JB to build up and glue the cheapo tin to the carb body. The metal will back up the JB to make it more solid because just alone it cracks real easy. Metal willalso stop fragments from being sucked into the engine which would suck if it smeared a bearing.

Re: JB weld and gas?

Well, if it wont affect the way the intake tube seals around the end of the carb, I think it would make more sense to just leave it. However, I am worried about the failed attempt at boring the carb body and what, if anything that will do. It had occurred to me that I could fill that in with JB weld and sand it all smooth just to make a nice even bore again.

Re: JB weld and gas?

Can't tell you if it what you want to do will work but I can tell (from experience) it will totally hold up to gasoline permanently. I have repaired very old gasoline tanks on both cars and motorcycles with the stuff. Jimmy

Re: JB weld and gas?

I repaired a desintegrated float bowl on a quadrajet carb. one time with Marine Tex. It was x-mas eve and all I wanted to do was make it to my moms an hour away for dinner the next day. I filled the float bowl with it and let it dry overnight. In the morning I put it together and it ran perfect. It worked so good that carb stayed on there for over a year till I did an intake swap and replaced it with a new one. That stuff really works, anything fuel related i'll use it again.

most epoxys will hold up to gas, water is a bigger problem than gas generally
