Puch Maxi cleaning gas tank HELP!!!

So I have a 1978 Puch Maxi that had gas sit in it for over ten years... I have used muratic acid 5 times with nuts and bolts to try to clean it out but it still keeps clogging my carb and petcock.

I read the wiki and tried the options listed on there but nothing I do seems to work....

Being that the tank is part of the bike does anyone know how I can get all that jelled up gas out of there? The muratic acid does great on rust but what about the old gas....

Any help would be great, the bike is awesome but this tank is killing me.

when i bought my peugeot, half the tank was one big black booger. i had to fill it with seafoam for a week before it became liquidy jello. i had to dump it all out with da bike upside down, but after that, one more time with a tank full seamfoam and it was golden.

Thats awesome, thank you for the idea... What I'm thinking is making something for my drill with steelwool on the end and break loose everything then soaking it with sea foam and maybe another acid bath. Thanks for the idea I'll give it a shot tomorrow!

i took a piece old cable, 12 " long , bent one inch to 90 degrees, put it in a variable speed drill, and went to work. it's a sludge buster. then i used acetone. i got a clean tank in the end.

just seal it, will save you a lot of time and work.

I suggest using caswell and not the other brands though.

You can do some reasearch on that.

In the end it will be like having a new tank.

Fill your tank with Glenfiddich 15 year Single Malt Scotch. Or an equivalent quality scotch. + 2 Repair Points and 1 bonus point for Performance points. That's 3 moped points bra!

I finally have some time tomorrow and thursday to to try out some of the suggestion excluding the idiot above my post.

Does anyone have any last minute wisdom to give me before I try the seafoam and drill cleaning? Thanks!!!!

Is that what that Jelly Vasaline stuff is? Old gas?

Took my petcock off just to see what would happen because my tank is kinda rusty; so i wanted to see if there was any rust at the bottom && yeah; some of the jelly stuff came out.

Jiggled the line for the petcock & drained the tank, a bunch of it came out; i feel like i didn't get it all out though =/

Hey Thomas,

I am going to try out some different methods I just took my engine off today... I'll let you know which one works the best for me, my tank is pretty damn bad. I'll get back to you on Wednesday cause that is when I'll be back from Vacation.

I have been fighting with the same problem for quite a while. My best solution so far has been paper fuel filters... carry a spare to replace when it clogs up. I tried many different chemicals and none really did a good job.. still lots of red rust comes out with fuel. Janius

Seafoam is a good idea, kind of expensive to fill a whole tank with it, but if it works it would be worth it.

Just an update for everyone because I am hoping that this post can be used for everyone who buys an old moped because out of the 6 I own 5 had old gelled up gasoline in the tanks. I have the bike engine taken off and the tank soaking in a salt vinegar solution. So far a lot of sedement has come out but not enough to relinquish my worries.

Next step is soaking the tank in acetone for 3 full days while I'm on vacation.

I'll probably end up doing that, but i need a quick fix before this Chicago rally, i might just end up mounting my SSXL tank onto the maxi..

I'll try the Seafoam & hopefully that takes care of it. my tank isn't HORRIBLE or anything, but it could be better.

Right now, my inline fuel filter keeps getting clogged with gelly gas.

If you really needed a quick and permanent fix, then you would've read my first post, done your research, and then realized you are doing too much work to get too little of a result.

Yes, clean your tank out.

Then seal it.

There are a bunch of brands, however, you should really stick to something like caswell or the por15 tank sealer.

The sealer takes 1 or 2 days to dry depending on temperature, and then the inside of your tank will never be rusty again because the sealer is a hardening coat on the inside.

to clean it you should use evaporust! that stuffs awesome just fixed up the tank on my old moped and i found like sticks and stuff in it, needless to say it was pretty nasty now a lil bit of evaporust and sealer i'm good :-)
