Tomos a35 rear wheel wont roll back OR idle with wheel stopped

My 01 targa is acting up.

Symptoms:

Rear wheel wont spin freely in reverse when engine is off (cant roll the bike backwards or spin it back wards)(turn it backwards with force and the engine turns)

Engine wont stay on if rear wheel ISNT spinning. Engine starts first kick, but it wont run with the rear brake engaged, or the wheel on the ground. only with it spinning.

White smoke from exhaust, yet no unordinary smell, and im sure this is just cause its crying inside.

Everything sounds fine. Everything looks fine.

I changed the Tranny fluid. I adjusted the throttle cable. nothing.

The rear wheel is a little black from the last ride, may have blown that gasket in between the sprocket and shaft bearing.. could this be why the rear wheel wont spin backwards? my old tomos with the black wheel of death did fine, and I ignored that gasket and just cleaned it... hence my confusion.

It sounds to me like you may have a clutch issue. When was the last time you inspected both clutches?

both were replaced with brand new ones in November 2010, it sat all winter, took it out a month or so ago, ran it about 50-60 miles since, with no fuckin problems.

what are you suggestion? i understand clutch issue, but what about it?

Poke around until you find the problem, its usually pretty obvious. There is more to the clutches than just the shoes. The drum rides on a 1 way bearing and bushing that should be inspected. Your cylinder kit and light weight rotor ignition combo will result in increased clutch wear/damage. Probably not in 6 miles though.

I think I have figured this out, Basically if your transmission sprocket (behind the 1st\2nd gear) isn't pressed in far enough, it wont allow your wheel to turn in reverse. I figured this out by simply pushing on it and realizing that without the pressure from my hand, the gears caught and binded together. As long as you have the correct shims and spacing, then by putting the cover on it should allow the wheel to spin backwards.

If you have a ton of white smoke, the seal behind the clutches is not working.

White smoke = atf burning.

im having the same issue i just got all the shims nessacery but appears i messed up someplace ..

mine tries to crank if i spin tire in reverse ..

Mine did that for awhile untill i did a wicked burnout/smokeshow one night an that fixed it an never happened again. Ride it like u stole it

mine has new clutches and crank . also went to drain it and the fluid is lookin a bit shiny im gonna crack it open again this evening

can this be caused but the clips around the clutches that you put on before the spring being put on wrong

or is there a difference in gear one and gear 2 clutches

okay, i posted a while ago looking for help but received none. I was able to fix it and i have some videos of inside the case of the a35 but im working on finding them on my old phone and will post it soon.

what you need to do is, once you have removed the pedal, drained the tranny fluid, removed the case bolts, seperate the case to reveal the clutches and gears inside the motor. remove the clutch bolt with a piston stop, then remove both the first and second gear clutch, since your clutches are new it doesnt hurt to inspect them while you have the case open, then once you have the clutches taken out, behind the gears, you will see a sproket with a chain that controls the back wheel and there is a piece of metal that rotates and it needs to sit horizontally and there is a slot behind the gears where this metal piece will need to be when you put everything back together. when you go to put it back together, make sure you keep pressure on the rod that the pedal connect to and the tire doesnt spin becuase if you spin the tire while the case is open after you set the metal piece i mentioned in place, it will just fall out and you have to redo everything.

sorry for rambling on but take your time and look for what im talking about and you should be able to fix it. keep us posted,

I had this issue yesterday . And did exactly that i put it back right but it poped off after the case was back together .

I just put a crank in it .

I will inspect and send video if its diffrent

Thank you I will keep you posted I will be home in about 3 hours should have new video posted in three and a half thank you. Dying to get this thing going ASAP it is Leafs season up here and where I live at 3600 feet we get a short season . Just want it ready before the snow hits

okay so the metal circular clip on the back of the gears, just make sure that it actually goes into the slot on the inside of the case. if it doesn't go into that slot, it will rotate when you move the back tire causing it to lock up.

try that and see if it works.

i think i got it this time will let you know its too dark top go further than the 7 miles i just went without a good check first leaks chain wheels carb bla bla bla

Okay good, I fixed the problem with my 95 targa lx by doing what i told you in the thread earlier. You should get into the habit of always replace the case gasket every time you open it up. Thats will prevent excessive oil on the chain and it'll keep your back tire clean.

Appears my carb refuses to work correctly . Bubble in fuel line . It ran out of gas yesterday and seems the fuel refuses to go past carb . I took the carb off 2 times and poured gas thru the line when removed then put it back on to find the same problem . .. i even put my stock sha 14-12 carb back on to see and nothing .

Im gonna remove the gas filter and put new lines on it . Hope it works
