Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

I have a motobecane 50L modified into a 50V. Stock variator, switched the gearing to standard 50V, 15 SHA with a 62 jet, stock pipe, and mild porting on the stock cylinder. On the kickstand, the thing revs up like crazy, but once you get on it, it bogs out and hits 25 tops on a city block straight away. It's not 4stroking, just horribly slow. The timing is on, the spark is strong, the engine variates on the stand, but barely when riding.

Any ideas? Could a small air leak on the intake be the culprit?

Thanks.

Re: Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

Sounds to me like you're not fully variating. I had that problem when I first got rid of my dimoby. Watch your variator while you're riding. Will it pull back all the way? You probably have to go with lighter weights. It's possible it's just stuck from lack of lubrication, too.

Or it could be something else. But the above was my experience.

Re: Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

I dunno about that. I would think if variation were the problem it would accelerate great and then hit a wall. Sounds to me like it's lean for some reason, and it's not variating all the way because it won't rev up enough. Check for air leaks, then mess with jetting. What's your spark plug look like?

Re: Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

re-read the post. states that the engine variates on the stand, but barely when riding

Leads me to assume exactly what I said. When the engine is loaded, it wont variate because of the wrong weight setup or poorly lubrication.

the reason I say this is because, as i said, I had exactly the same problem when I did the 50L to 50V conversion. Experience speaks for itself. Of course, it doesnt mean that's the problem here.

Re: Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

Thanks guys, this helps.

I know I have a small air leak on my carb intake. I also have all the weights in my variator still. Should I lose one? Does that make the motor drop easier?

Also, my engine bushing is a little dry rotted. Could that be holding it back?

As far as lubrication goes, what are the spots I should be checking? The dry rotted bushing maybe?

Thanks again! This bike is giving me nightmares, I've put a decent amount of work into it and it runs about the same as the 50L stock.

I also made sure the spring wasn't too stiff/keeping the motor from variating if that helps narrow things down at all.

Re: Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

Give her a leakdown test to see if the spi seals are leaking. check that the collar on the Del is not leaking like they all tend to do. Make sure the timing is set to 1,5mm BTDC and tighten up on the spark plug gap.

Open up the exhause pipe a little if you ported the engine and running a 15mm carb the extra breathing has to go somewhere.

Re: Motobecane rips on kickstand, otherwise sucks.

I'm definitely at 1.5mm(ish) before dead center, and the collar on the carb is sealed.

However... what are spi seals? Admittedly, I tried to google it, and I still don't get it.

By opening up the exhaust, do you mean the cylinder, or de-restricting the actual exhaust? If cylinder- done. If de-restriction- how?

How is your belt?

Small air leak probably wouldn't cause this problem, but it may. When you're on mabecane's site look at the maintenance section, and read up on lubing the variator. That'll keep it all sliding easily. If your mounts are totally shot, it may cause it to not variate all the way, especially if the tranny side mount is in worse shape than the stator side.

I wouldn't worry about the spring. They're the same for both versions. Do you have a 3 ball or 4 ball variator? If you have a 4 ball, take two balls out. If you have the 3 ball, buy a 4 ball backing plate and run 2 balls. I have a 4 ball plate if you need.
