Suzuki FA50 kick starter problems!

Ok, when I kicked my FA50 over it didn't engage... so I tore the engine out and took the side cover off.

Now, I can see the metal plate that's on the kick shaft that moves out of the way for the gears to engage when kicking, then snaps back when the kick start is released to prevent the gears from engaging once running.

My problem is... it doesn't EVER get out of the way for the gears to engage! It is snapped over it all the time. The video shows this a little.

I know when someone tells me what is wrong I'll smack my forehead... it HAS to be simple as there doesn't appear to be anything missing or broken.

Anyone here familiar with these?

Here is a pic so you can see what I mean: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v245/aaron7/?action=view&current=DSC02024.jpg

According to that diagram, the rear brakes play a part in this. YOU HAVE TO PULL THE BRAKE LEVER IN WHEN KICKING!!!

Ugh. I'm going to go have a beer now.

Re: Suzuki FA50 kick starter problems!

theirs a safety lever around the rear brake area if you messed with the brakes or anything i did the same thing, also for it to engage it has to be at 90 degrees if that made any sense

Re: Suzuki FA50 kick starter problems!

i did the same thing when i got my first one well at least you know whats be hind that cover

Re: Suzuki FA50 kick starter problems!

I have an FZ50...i had the same problem...the kick slips...thats not a major problem...i had to take the cable out and put a nut on it so it would help it engage better...it works like Kings now..
