Thanks, everybody, for your posts. Sorry about my lag in response--we took a trip on Friday to handybikes and if you want to see photos go to the general forum here: https://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/discuss/1/301660/301660/
Harold--I pretty much did what you suggested, though I did it before I saw your suggestion. I'm sorry to disappoint those of you who hoped I'd restore this with the 102 engine, but while I was at handybikes I found a NOS 103 engine, the last one he had. It's not the variated model, but as you can see I got a variator to make it into one. It appears as though I will have to change out the crankshaft, which is the part I'm looking for now. BJ is doing some research to find it for me.
It's just not as important to me that it's restored to it's original condition as much as it is that I should be able to ride it comfortably. With Pittsburgh hills, a reed valve and variator should be a nice added boost.
I don't know if the bike "smells like grandma" or not yet :) --my parents are kindly picking it up for me later today, since they took a trip to Philly this weekend and they're going right by it. I, too, Deezy am wondering what size tires those are. They look gargantuan! And thanks very much for offering to help with your engine parts. Right now I won't need anything because of my handybikes splurge, but I'm sure if I need something you'll see my appeal on the forum in a few months time. What bikes are you working on right now? That Allstate is an absolute gem.
