Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

I just got an 87 motobecane and it is in dire need of a tune up but i'm woefully inadequate when it comes to repairs, oil change, etc. Does anyone know a place in the Boston area where I could bring it.

Also I can't seem to find side panels. I've only managed to find one set and they are $55. I'm not sure how reasonable that price is or is not.

thanks!

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

They better be in good shape or new.

But decent side panels are sorta rare. Not unobtainable though.

I'm not sure about the 87, but it's probably 2 stroke, so mixing the fuel with oil is essential. Changing the oil? Transmission oil, only if there is any. Some people use Type F Automatic transmission fluid. Some people use 30 wt. oil. I use Amsoil synthetic 2 stroke oil right in the transmission of mine, and love it in there! Then again, mine's a totally different moped than yours. I don't know a bunch about motobecanes, but there's alot of people here that do.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

Hi Emily

I am in Maine, and I fancy myself a motobecane specialist.

I seriously doubt it is a 1987, as I believe there were no mopeds being made under the motobecane name made after 83 or so.

If you look at the fork plate (behind the headlamp) you will find the year, exact model, and speed rating (miles)

I have a set of side panels that I just painted white, but I would have to know what model you had to be sure they would fit.

Honestly you should get the thing running well before spending any money on aesthetics

How is it running now?

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

HI there!

thanks for responding. you are right. I just went and looked it is not a 87. It's a 78 and it is a 50V. The speed rating is B. I don't actually know what that means maybe you could tell me.

I'm not sure it is running just yet. The last time I rode this moped personally was almost 4 years ago and it was running great then. But it was my step brother's and he took really poor care of it because he thought it was "gay". It's been sitting outside under a tarp for the last 2 years and it's gotten a bit rusty. I went and rescued it a few days ago.

I wanted to clean everything out before I tried to start it for fear that the old gunk in the engine would eff it up more. I haven't tried to start it but I was gonna try today. I live with a couple of guys who just fixed a 77 50V so our bikes are twinsies but they haven't been around to look at it.

I bet I could navigate it myself if I had a little guide to teach me how to clean it up. But i wouldn't mind throwing down like 50 bucks for a tune up to get her hummin'.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

It was brought to my attention that it's actually a 78. It's definitely 2 stroke. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

Emily, I live in Salem and work in Boston. I might have side panels for you, I know I have a couple kicking around. I'lll take pics of what I have and email them. What color is your bike?

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

Check the attachment. The black and blue ones are right hand side, the white ones are a pair.

Getting it running before investing in aesthetics is good advice. But if you're interested, let me know.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

wow thanks.

my bike is baby blue so the blue one is perfect. I tried to start it today and it did not work. My roommate tells me it needs quite a bit of work but I'm definitely prepared to fix it. He says he needs to take it apart but that it will definitely run.

but i would still be interested in the panels. How much do panels usually go for?

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

See Ya Moped Army /

Don't let him/her take it apart unless he/she knows what they're doing. I've seen many a moped taken apart and never put back together due to incompetence and/or impatience.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

3 of those panels are for the model 40, and will not fit properly.

the black one would fit.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

Doh.

Well, Emily, if you want that black one I'll sell it to you for $25. You can always spraycan it blue.

And if anyone wants to buy the model 40 panels let me know.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

Ewww!

After looking at that picture with the flash photo I lower the price to $15

they look much better in the dark

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

thanks. I appreciate the tip but the guy who is going to fix it just fixed my roommates model which is exactly the same as mine and it works well now. He is a pretty competent guy.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

I like these white ones. They will fit for definite? I would want them. Email me antisocialelite@yahoo.com. We can talk about payment.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

Thanks but I looked there. The 55 dollar ones were from mopedjunkyard and there wasn't anything on ebay that fit my bike.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?

hey Dan,

Also! Would you happen to have a manual kicking around? I looked online and they seem much to expensive to be a burned CD ($24) or a paper manual($28.) I would pay you for it of course.

Re: Finding Side Panels//Tune Up Boston?
