Cady, BARELY running

Ok, so i've been fixing up a Cady, I've already achieved spark and it seems the Cady has OK compression (haven't actually tested). I cleaned the carb recently and noticed the float bowl had a leak in it. I tried pedelling the Cady without the float bowl and it fired up a few times inconsistenly and veryy choppy and not well and the carb was leaking. But I know i got combustion which made me satisfied. I tried putting the float bowl in and it wouldn't work. I fixed the float bowl with a glue gun, and again it wouldn't start. I tried a fresh tank of 25:1 and it...wouldn't start. What could be the problem? Should I take apart the carb again, purchase a new float bowl, I buy a new Dellorto Carb?

P.S. I Tried regapping the spark plug and figured a bigger gap would make a bigger spark=better chance of igniting the engine, That didn;t work either. And I tested the spark plug on the block and it still works.

P.P.S There is no exhaust pipe

Re: Cady, BARELY running

What kind of bike is it?

what do you mean by a leak? There is lots of holes in the carb that should not be plugged.

How did you take off the float bowl? Its attached to the carb.

Try using some starter fluid.

Re: Cady, BARELY running

Bigger gap means weaker spark because it has to jump farther.

Re: Cady, BARELY running

thanks for the tip nate, and for nick, Its a 1976 Motobecane Cady. There is a leak in the float, letting gas in, therefore it does not float. The float bowl is attached to the carb, and the float that is supposed to float inside, is what it leaking. I'm sorry I think I confused you by accidentally calling the float, a float bowl.

cady's suck..my friend learned it the hard way..sell it asap and get a real motobecane/moped.

Re: Cady, BARELY running

Ohhhh... i see. floats can cause a lot of problems with fuel flow. if you have another replace it. if not ask around and see if any one has one you can borrow. I still suggest trying some starter fluid to make sure its not a spark issue. once you have that ruled out you can focus on getting the fuel flow issue solved.

Re: Cady, BARELY running

Yeah, I don't know to many people around me that work with mopeds.I think borrowing a float bowl would be tough. Im contemplating whether or not I should buy a new one, or buy a whole new carb. What is starter fluid, is it the same thing as Aerosol carb cleaner?

cady's were just cheap motobecane mopeds sold at canadian tire for stupid moms that were too scared to go fast...they arent built for speed.

craig, you sound like a real nice guy. steven. make sure you have the correct plug a champion L86C if i remember correctly and that it is gapped right, i cant remember exactly but somewhere around .020" should be about right. the float plays a critical role in the carb, as the fuel level in the float bowlneeds to be at the correct level in order for the main jet to meter the amount of fuel properly. so its pretty imperative you either get a new one or a new carb. starting fluid or 'ether' as its sometimes called is just a super volatile, flammable spray you spray in the engine to help it fire

Re: Cady, BARELY running

Thanks for the advice Jason. I have a Champion RL86C I believe its the same as an L86C. I have it gapped to 0.018, which is what a Champion Reference Guide on mopedriders.org says. The Cady service manual however, says a different gaps, buyt also for a different plug. Not sure which one I should follow. Anyways Ill probably end up purchasing a whole new carb. AS for the main jet, how far does it have to be screwed in? Theres a whole strait through the jet, and I wonder if that hol, has to line up with the whole in the carb. You proably dont know what Im talking about but thats ok. Ill most likely buy a dellorto with a jet size similar to the Gurtner's 215.

I dont know if the Cady carb is different than a real moby carb but it sounds like you straight up need a new carb.

cady carbs are even smaller than a normal motobecane carb, and in order to get a new carb, you need to rig something up to make it work.
