MOBY runs, need info

So lets see, Hmmm.... It has been stored for two years. This is the first time I've had it running. No air box, I think thats why it won't hold idle. Original Gurtner carb. The variator doesn't want to variate all the time. It seems to stay at the bottom. The belt is in good shape. When it runs it tends to surge a bit, I think it may be because of a dirty carb or no air box.

I pulled it out of storage and got in running in about 15 minutes, it does need a tune up. The exhaust has a fair amount of carbon build up. I don't know about the exhaust port yet. I was just wondering all you other moby owners out there what else should I do to get this beast running tip top or better than crap.

How does one check the points on a 50v, how do i get the cover off the mag? I assume I need an impact wrench.

Thanks all youse guys

Word!

Re: MOBY runs, need info

Good info here.

Carb must be spotless as usual.

Grease the variator using the little zerge nipple in the center.

Any ideas about the surging?

Re: MOBY runs, need info

Crackstar, be careful about running without an airfilter, I was running with a free-flowing filter I made and my bike died, I'm pretty sure it was running too lean and I overheated it. I don't know what a stock airbox should look like, none of my bikes have one, but I can tell you that 4 layers of oiled pantyhose stretched over an opening the diameter of a tuna can is NOT restrictive enough.

I'm guessing I should make the delorto swap soon. Last time i tried running it, bout 2 years ago. It ran fine with the air box. But the Air box was empty, no filter no nothing. later with out the air box on it ran like crap, complete crap. Now with no filter or box it runs but not well. Its weird. Its Fench

Re: MOBY runs, need info

Seems like a intermitently variation clutch would cuase the engine to surge and lurch and not idle properly.

Also if the idle is set slightly too fast the clutch will grab and release causing lurching.

Remove the belt, grease it and spray some teflon or white grease where the balls are, work the pulley in and out by hand toll it moved smoothly, wipe off any excess lube, let it dry, put the belt back on and try it again.

Re: MOBY runs, need info

Sounds likea problem Im having, just Barely does my Motobecane cady run. II've had combustion a few times, but not consistently. Im thinking of doing what you're doing. Swtich to a dellorto. That will take care of idle, choke and you air filter. This will make it run smoother. good luck.

Re: MOBY runs, need info

mine is doing the same lurching thing- even when I disengage the motor and am in bike mode. I'm thinking it's due to the fact that it's been in a garage for 29 years with no lube or grease on the pulley or variator. But I also don't currently have an airbox on, and will be switching to dellorto very soon.

Re: MOBY runs, need info

Variator needs to be greased..see inverse zirk on left hand side of engine...in the center of the spinnig part. You will have to make a fitting..I used a needle fitting with the needle removed. -3 pumps every 2,000 to 3,000 miles. Carb probly needs to be cleaned. Check petcock for free flow. Clean exhaust. Good luck! If you have not done so dump old gas and check tank for rust!
