Carb help, 197? Cady

Im trying to fix a 197? Motobecane Cady, and I've already established spark and I think it has good compression. I have determined that fuel flow to the engine is not occuring and I've decided to try and fix the carb. Im not too experienced and think I may invest in a completely new carb. Possibly and aftermarket one, or maybe the stock Gurtner carb. Is it possible to put on an aftermarket carb such as a Dellorto, because I heard the Gurtners are garbage. The one thats on now is an AR10 and theres one on ebay that looks like it would fit and says it fits that model. Would a performance aftermarket one enhance speed/performance, or does the jetting and everything have to be specific to the motor. Thanks.

Re: Carb help, 197? Cady

Cadys are usually restricted internally. It has that weird wraparound intake doesn't it? A larger carb probably won't do much, however, if you can fit a suitably sized dellorto on your intake, it might save you some trouble. My gurtner was sort of bitchy.

Re: Carb help, 197? Cady

I just cleaned and installed my first Gurtner on a 77 "Cane" once it's warmed up a bit it idles fine, does not leak and runs perfectly.

I tend to think you should het it running well as a stock ped before you start trying to change things.

If you can find a good deal on a NOS carb it can save you alot of greif.

Remove the petcock and see of the screen is clogged.

yeah, wraparound intake. Im nt sure how to find a similar sized carb though. I heard you need specidifc jetting and stuff like that.

Re: Carb help, 197? Cady

Thats the great thing with the dellorto. If you can get one to fit, the jetting choices are pretty much unlimited.

Re: Carb help, 197? Cady

I really dont know much about carbs, but how would I know which jets are right, how do a read/cross-reference a jet size?

right on rusty. cleaning a carb is cake. unless the carb is actually broken, buying a new one is a waste of money.

Re: Carb help, 197? Cady

The cady sat outside a house for 20 years in Canadian winter, (the guy gave it to me for free) and I got the thing fixed up a bit. But the carb looks ok, but the float bowl is dented and there no airbox/airfilter on it so im thinking of just gettin a new carb. If I did get a carb cleaner, is the aerosol or non aerosol better. thanks

aerosol is better since you can blast the crap out of there. im pretty sure 1977mopeds.com has an airfilter, youll need one to get the motor to run right. if the carb on ebay is cheap enough <$20 then it may be worth getting just to experiment with.

Re: Carb help, 197? Cady

I've logged a few hours on the cady carb...a finicky little contraption if I do say so! If you are going to work on the one you have, disassemble everything, run a strand of stiff wire through EVERY orifice, remove the diffuser (but note its exact position in the housing) and ensure that the tiny pin holes of the idle circuit are not gummed up, soak the carb body in heavy-duty cleaner (Tip: drop it off at your neighborhood hot rod shop. They do all kinds of carb work and they have some intense carb cleaner). After the soak, get them to blow out everything with compressed air. (If they're a decent shop, they probably won't even charge you!)

And if you need an air filter/box, I have one to offer up.
