Brake light on=engine kill on 79 Motobecane 50VLA

I haven't even started to trace the wiring yet, but I just thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone had an idea of where to start. The taillight does work and lights up just fine while the bike is on, but when I hit the brake lever, it goes dark and the engine quits. Furthermore, the headlight doesn't work.

Any help with a starting point would be greatly appreciated.

Check for a loose ground connection at the taillight.

Sounds like a plan. Much appreciated, sir!

Re: Brake light on=engine kill on 79 Motobecane 50

At the risk of sounding obvious, is the brake light bulb burned out?

Re: Brake light on=engine kill on 79 Motobecane 50

OKAY, I'M AN IDIOT. You're right, Nate -- it's burnt!

I didn't check it because I incorrectly assumed that it used one dual-filament bulb for both taillight and brake light. Now I gotta get a new bulb and go back to the drawing board.

Thanks for the obvious tip.
