Brakes on a Batavus HS50

I just got a Batavus HS50 and it runs great but the drum brakes dont seem to have any grip. I have been looking at 1977 mopeds and wondering if any of those brake shoes would be the right fit. Does anyone have any experience with repairing brakes on these hot dutch rides. I know they are difficult to find parts for.

any info at all would be great as im a new owner and want to learn as much as possible about this bike.

Re: Brakes on a Batavus HS50

brake pads and drum surfaces get slippery with use .. they develop a hard 'glaze' .. so, they slip and may squeek.

most times, a little coarse (like 220) sandpaper on the drum and pad surfaces makes a dramatic difference . Use Brake Cleaner as a final wash to remove any oil or whatever. Don't get the slightest amount of oil or grease on the clean surfaces. Carefully lubricate any pivots points.. lastly, adjust the cable.

thanks joew! any advice on taking apart the drum brake ityself? or any links to diagrams of this? I bet i can figure it out but let me know if you have any hints.

Re: Brakes on a Batavus HS50

nah... there's nothing to it.. things dont get much simpler than they are on a moped.

on most bikes the brake assembly just falls out of the wheel when the wheel is removed from the frame.. and no disassembly of the brake is needed to do the maintanance..

do inspect the brake pads for severe wear. Just like on an automobile, if a pad is worn down to the metal shoe, the wheel drum is likely damaged too. A new wheel would be in order in that case.

Repair Manual

there are 2 Batavus manuals on THIS PAGE

page 80 of the "Batavus Repair Manual 1976 - 1978" says there are little inspection holes to check pad wear .. and there's the usual adjustment/ inspection/ disassembly information.

Ben Van Zoest /

Most older Euro peds have the same hub specs same brake shoes, sprockets and chains...

Re: Brakes on a Batavus HS50

Yeah, Im wondering if these "Puch 90mm Brake Shoes" from 1977mopeds will fit it.

Re: Brakes on a Batavus HS50

These are pictures of my break shoes (after sanding) and my drums (unsanded). I cant tell if the drums are overly worn. does anyone know by looking at the pics if either the wheel or the shoe needs to be replaced?
