My manual says i need to put sae-90 gear oil in the rear reduction.

what is sae 90 oil?

Re: Sae

thick gear oil.

It's sold by the quart, and usually has a thin nozzle on the top.

Used alot in lower ends of outboards too, but can be found on or near the oil shelves in any place that carries motor oil. Seen it marked also as SAE 80-90 gear oil

sae Society of Automotive Engineers. it means they gave their seal of approval to the integrity of the oil. i have yet to ever see an oil that wasnt sae

Re: Sae

The term SAE has nothing to do with a 'seal of approval'.. it's just a system of standards. When an oil is marked SAE 85W90, it just means that it's a specific (standardized) viscosity.

all this time i was going around with bad information. now that i think about it your definition makes much more sense
