What is suppossed to be in a Maxi airbox?

I have a 1978 Maxi and I was taking the carb apart because it's leaking. (I only got 12 miles out of my first gallon of gas!) As I was taking the air box off, I realized that it's totally empty. Should there be something in there? Alternatives at this point? Man, did I have a lot of gunk in the float bowl, considering that I had just emptied it twelve miles ago. I'm going to clean the fuel tank on Saturday but I thought that the hollow air box might have something to do with all that crud in there too. Any thoughts?

Re: What is suppossed to be in a Maxi airbox?

crud coming in with the air is minimal... dust and stuff. My thought is your gas tank could use the services of a formally ordained exorcist.

What should be in there: an air filter! what can be used for now: a sponge or rag

It's a coarse fiber material. You could use these pan scrubber

things, orange in color than spray with filter oil. Also decontaminate the gas tank. Wash out all that crude, take off the spigot of course first. Clean fuel, air and spark she will run perfect.

Joew's right, gas tank probably needs a de-rusting. Air filter has nothing to do with crap getting into the float bowl.

Re: What is suppossed to be in a Maxi airbox?

i posted that thinking that the only stuff that could enter the float bowl comes from the fuel line.. but then i'm thinking about how something could possiby get into the bowl in some other way..

the bowl's vent?. Standard carbs have a bowl vent.. some bowl vents have tubes attached.. If you stick the end of that tube somewhere that lots of dirt can enter, maybe some could get in that way.. How might this be related to the air box?

Could the vent tube be routed near or into the air box area? That airbox is supposed to be a non-servicable unit according to a MAxi manual i browsed through.. How did it come apart for inspection?

Thanks, Bernard. That was the answer I was looking for. Of course I knew that it was supposed to have an air filter in it. I just wondered what kind of material it originally had.

It didn't come apart, but it's certainly easy enough to look in to it and see that it's empty. No tubes near the airbox. It must be the gas tank letting in all that junk. Thanks.
