I am opening up the gearbox to get some debris from the destroyed gear oil filler cap. Are there any cautions I need to be aware of?
Second, what kind of oil do I need to replace it with?

forgot to mention that it is a 178 Puch Maxi II
Just remember how it came apart, take note of any shims or washers and their placement.

MAKE SURE TO REMOVE THE STAND SPRING ATTACHED TO THE CLUTCH COVER BEFORE YOU START REMOVING SCREWS. IF YOU DON'T THE STRENGTH OF THE SPRING WILL PULL PLATE OUT OF PLACE BEFORE YOU CAN FINISH UNSCREWING..... happened to me this morning :(
ahaha maxmagnum that sux .......mike also be aware that taking the tranny cover off gives u a very good chance of ruining the gasket so be prepared.....

yeah.... that's what happened to me, not to mention that the shitty weather started acting up out of nowhere and i think a few drops of water got past my ruined gasket and into the clutch area. just hope it wasn't too much
you're going to want to refill the gearbox with Automatic Transmission Fluid Type F.
done and done, also sealed it up extra secure with some gasket sealant.
