Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

I recently dug out of my back shed a garelli eureka, (i'll take a pic as soon as i can find my camera) but it has not been used for at least 15 years, so it is sorely in need of repair.

I found (on ebay UK, i'm in Maryland, USA) the haynes workshop manual, so I've got directions (this is my first moped, but i've done quite a bit of work on cars / trucks etc.)

It's got some minor rust, and ~1800 miles on it.

I'm bringing this up for a couple reasons:

1. anyone nearby who has a similar garelli, we should meet

2. where can I purchase replacement / upgrade parts? preferably online.

3. what are the most important repairs that i should make?

4. where can i find replacement tubes/tires for it? are they just bike tires?

thank you for reading, and any information you can provide is greatly appreciated! Please contact me by Aol Aim at daegon315, as that is the best way to get my attention... or just post as replies of course.

Thanks again!

i've attached an image of the moped, yeah it's not pretty, yeah it needs work, but it's mine!

tsk tsk at me for not reading the posted articles. very informative. i'll ask specific questions in here if needed. Thanks anyways.

I love Eureka's, and ALL garellis. I collect them, only have two right now but am looking for more around the area.

The Trunk is very cool on it!

It's carb is probably clogged. Easy peds to work on too!

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

thanks for the reply andy. I've spent the last three hours working on it, and i have quite a bit of information now. It does not currently run. The chain is rusty and wd-40 freed it up a lot. I can wheel it around now without too much drag. The spedometer works, once it has been moving for a few seconds, so ( i believe) the generator works. The tires and tubes are good, i pumped it up yesterday and they\'re still hard. However... the fuel system is very upset. it was stored with a small amount of gas (~12 oz) in the tank, and every valve, tube and seal from the opening at the bottom of the gas tank to the carburator's filter (small round plastic/mesh filter underneath a beige cap. I beleive this to be the fuel filter) is clogged. I've still got work to do, but it's coming along. see attached:

correct me if i'm wrong but

A - Condeser (powers and regulates spark plug)

B - Carb airbox

C - Carburator

A is not a condensor. It is a coil.

Daniel,

I had one just like it. The speedometer is purely mechanical so as long as the fron tire is rolling, it will work. Yes, you have correctly indetified the fuel filter, also. The condensor is by the points under the flywheel.

By the way, this is a Eureka Flex. so called because it has the rear suspension and not the hard tail. There should be a plate on the frame where the fork goes in with a year and a serial # on it. and a star in the serial # Leon

thank you very much for the clarification guys!

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

thanks a lot! that's really useful!

i've flipped through that, but i recently bought the haynes repair manual off ebay, so that should cover everything i want to do.

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

Question: there is a severe dent on the end of my tailpipe (seen after removing the muffler to clean tailpipe) which closes off about 30% of the exit of the pipe. would I mess anything up if i just chopped off that approximately 3/4" of the tailpipe?

Overhauled the carb today.

After:

all i need to replace is the banjo, aside from the gummy sludge, it seems fine. half an hour of soaking cleaned out the carb and jet quite well.

Daniel,

I'll pull the clutch rubber and carb banjo for ya' tomorrow, and I'll email you pics of them. Are there any other parts that you need for your project?

Also, would you let me know how many teeth your front and rear sprockets have? I'm helping one of my locals here out with his Garelli, and I'm really curious about the gearing ratios on them.

Thanks!

Smitty

LOL, I've revived 'peds that looked worse than yours, lol. Don't give-up, get that 'ped running and ride it!!!

Good Luck!!! If I can help, just let me know :^)

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

today i drained and opened the transmission, which looked flawless. I also stole a glance underneath the cylinder head... what i saw does not bode well with my plans. The piston is locked. the engine does not turn over. what i presume to be carbon deposits are several millimeters thick all inside the chamber. (at least the parts i could see. What should i use to clean this off?

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

News!

Today I got a lot done. I removed the engine/transmission, then played with the piston enough to free the piston! Spinning the flywheel now moves the piston all the way through its cycle.

But i'm somewhat confused. Should pedalling cycle the piston/spin the flywheel? Should pedalling while pulling the clutch start lever cycle the piston?

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

Smitty Smith /

you have to pull the clutch lever to engage the starter clutch

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

exellent. thank you so very much smitty.

this means that once my parts come in from mopedjunkyard (over in Ocean City, MD) i should have all the parts to a fully functioning 'ped.

Hope to have her running by the end of the week!

Re: Help with a 1976? Garelli Eureka

i've got news and a couple more questions.

on monday i recieved: fuel valve, line, filter, banjo fitting, brake cable, 52 jet (for future bore/stroke) head gasket, and a couple other odds and ends.

i installed all of it, with exeption of the new jet (keeping the stock 47 for the time being) and took off the chain. i filled the tranny with SAE30 ND.

Now i've just got 5 things left on the todo list before it should run

1. Chain - soak in kero and wirebrush, replace master link clip

2. Gas Tank - gumout and drain, repeat.

3, when i turn the pedals (with no chain attached) i get a lot of resistance. any ideas what this is? i'm going to drain and refill it, but I'm perplexed on this one.

4. Tail light - replace bulb and secure cover.

5. Spark plug - replace

snip

1. Chain – soak in kero and wirebrush, replace master link clip

(make sure the curve of the master link is facing the direction that the chain travels.)

2. Gas Tank – gumout and drain, repeat. (never tried that)

3, when i turn the pedals (with no chain attached) i get a lot of resistance. any ideas what this is?

(Hmm this is pretty weird, any chance the shaft is bent??)

i’m going to drain and refill it, but I’m perplexed on this one.

4. Tail light – replace bulb and secure cover.

(This is a tailight/brakelight bulb 6 volt dual filament..make sure you get the right one.)

5. Spark plug – replace (don't forget to gap the new one..)
