Petcock leaks, not sure if I put it together right or if there's parts missing.
1.) Should petcocks have a rubber seal or something inside of it?
2.) Is there any kind of sealant you're suppose to put on the threads before screwing the petcock on?

yes it should have rubber washer with holes in it that line up with the 'valve' depending on what position it is in. but it can still be there, but be worn out. if its leaking from the threads then, yes use teflon tape or pipe dope of something. is it leaking outside of the valve or is it just still letting fuel though even when its closed? -jason
I didn't have time to look. I wanted to see if I had this project wired right. I couldn't figure out the "screwdriver coil test" so I poured a cup of gas in this junker I'm fixing up to see if it would start up. I smelled the gas and then realized that indoors, down in my basement , 10 meters from a gas furnace was a lousy place to be foolin around with gas.
I think it was the threads though. I'll try some teflon. Thanks!
The little holes in the rubber gasket can be a booger. If they even get the slightest slit or worn spot they will leak even when the valve is closed.
there should also be a wave washer that applies pressure to the lever, pushing it tight against the rubber washer inside the petcock. it is the most easily lost part when you first take one apart. if its not there, the petcock will leak.
new petcocks can be found at www.partsfish.com. the rubber seal with the holes can be found at any lawn mower repair shop. it is used on a honda hr214 lawn mower and located on the carb. the petcock on this mower is actually part of the carb.
sounds like a bad gasket
i tryed to make a new one with gasket material but it was too hard to get the goles in the right spot
i ended up ordering a new one at ikesbikes.com
