Rear Sprocket Wear

Nic Soontiens /

Can anyone speculate as to the cause for the wear on my rear sprocket on my 103?? The teeth are worn down almost to a sharp point (ie: the wear slants down to the left).

Better yet, how do I correct the prob? I will buy a new sprocket and chain, but I don't know how to check for "wear" on a chain??

Thanks guys,

Nic

ps - if anyone has a 52 tooth sprocket and a chain to replace mine, pls let me know!

Re: Rear Sprocket Wear

Sprockets wear down from normal use just like anything else. Bad chain/sprocket alignment or chain tension adjustment or a rusty chain or dirty chain/sprocket can accelerate sprocket wear.

The chain is laid out straight the length is measured. If it's bearings are worn or the chain is stretched the measurement will beyond manufacturer's specifications and it's time for a new chain. Check your owner's manual for specs.

Loose, sloppy chain links or kinks indicate it's time for a new one.

Re: Rear Sprocket Wear

You need a special chain for you Peugeot I have them new and will most likely have the 52 sprocket new as well if interested.

Re: Rear Sprocket Wear

Also check the sprocket that DRIVES the chain from the engine. If the engine sprocket(primary sprocket) is worn, you'll not get a perfect fit with your new chain and rear sprocket. I'm sure ChrisMWH has those also. don-ohio (:^D

Re: Rear Sprocket Wear

Yes check the front one as well . However Peugeot front sprockets wear like Iron.

Re: Rear Sprocket Wear

Chris, do you have the rear sprocket for a Columbia Open Road (aka KKM aka Montgomery Ward) with the Sachs 505 engine?

I have the Columbia Open Road with the Solo engine and it originally comes with a really large rear sprocket. The ones that comes off the Sachs has the smaller sized ones. Would the smaller one fit my wheel? (It has 4 bolts)

Re: Rear Sprocket Wear

A dry chain is most likely the problem. Get a can of spray chain lube. Spray the new chain and after installing spray it at the end of a ride at least every two weeks.

CHRIS MWH: need that rear sproket and chain
