puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

I just changed the 80w gear oil in my transmisson out for some dextron mercon transmission oil. Now I am noticing that the bike doesn't want to idle with the rear tire turning. Also, when it is off, you cannont roll it backwards without it turning the motor over the wrong way. Rolls fine forward. I am wondering if maybe something is wron with the drive clutch.

Any hints?

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

You said it doesn't want to idle with the rear wheel not turning, do you mean not turning? If so it is posiible that something is wrong with the clutch, it may be sticking for a number of reasons, springs are bad, cable on starter clutch is sticking, the fluid may have things messed up and it may need to be flushe out a coupke times to clean it out.

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

ide say just stick with the ATF type F

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

yeah I would also second what david said, my manual says 1 and 2 speeds should be filled with type f ATF, thats all I ever run in my 1 speed, is the dextron mercon detergent based? or is just an atf of sorts,

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

yea so replace the trans. fluid with

type "F" ATF

and if that does not help loosen the starter/clutch cable

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

its a 2 speed so i wouldnt mess with cable tension too much

i distroyed a puch 2-speed engine my breaking the little cable going into the trans.

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

I figured you can "powershift" the Puch 2 speed. Just tap the starter lever when it is near the shift point, and it will "snap," like a Chevy T350 tranny with a shift kit. I imagine this is probably bad in the long run though.

Re: puch 2-speed wont roll backwards

yea most likely

does anyone have any non-speculative ideas? The difference in F and Dextron is not going to matter.

I am thinking that it might be the clutch springs broken but why would that keep it engaged when rolling backwards. Weird.

well, I am an idiot. I didn't tighten down the nut that holds the clutches enough. I tightened it up and bent up an extra tab to make sure and hold it snug. Filled it back up with dextron mercon and it runs and shifts perfectly.
