I just changed my rings today and i had a question. everytime that i sit at a light i either have to give my bike about half choke, or some gas to keep it running. is that normal? any help would be great.

did you torque the head bolts?

you know what come to think of it, the shop was getting ready to close and i think i may have just tightened them but not to spec torque. i was just about to grab the torque wrench and was like oh you guys closed 20 min ago, let me get out so you can close.

that may be the problem.

i will check that as soon as i can get back to the shop. thank you much

Re: just changed my rings

You can do some fine torqueing useing a weighing scale with say a 1-10lb range pushed up against a wrench with a 12 inch arm. Other wrench arm lengths can be used like 6 or 9 inch but you just need to do the math. Quite precise and handy especially for inch/lbs

Re: just changed my rings

I dont think it the torque. I just got new rings for my motobecane, and the problem is that your engine has a hard time running because the new rings cause it to have really good compression, once the rings break in it will idle fine.

Note what interbob said...You will need to do some serious break-in time on these new rings. Don't treat it hard for a long time.

I know for a fact that it is the head bolts. when i tried to ride to class today i couldnt even get my bike to start. when i got it to start wanting to run i could feel pressure excaping where the head meets the cylinder. i didnt wrnech down on the head bolts because i was going to get the torque wrench but wanted to let the guys leave the shop at a good time. i am just about to tighten the bolts in like 10 min. thanks for the help.

I tore my head off again last night and found the problem. first off the head bolts were not very tight, but the kicker was my head gasket. i must have put a little tear in it when i put the whole thing back together and not realzed it. when i took the head off i had a chunck missing out of the gasket that was about 3 mm on the inside of the cylinder, and bout 1 cm on the outside of the gasket. i think i will chalk this up to the fact that the head has been off atleast 6 times that i can think and the gasket was probibly kinked. when the pressure hit the gasket it must have just blown the piece away where the kinks were. my quick fix was making an exact replica out of a cereal box. this should do till i can get to the shop and buy a new one. again thanks for all of your help.
