rusty gas tank... what to do?

i've got a 1975 motobecane and the tank is all rusty inside. is there anything i can do to save it? i was thinking maybe i could just rig up a dofferent tank to work on it or something... any ideas?

Re: rusty gas tank... what to do?

if you keep gas in it it shouldn't rust any more than it has.

i used an outboard lawn mower fuel filter to keep tank rust out of carb. stuck it between petcock and carb.

you can put a little gas/oil mix in it with some BB's and shake it a bunch to knock the loose rust off. this might keep petcock from becoming blocked.

You could also get a kreem kit.

I kreemed my gas tank and it's a production and a half if your tank is part of your frame, but it works really well. i also had an enormous amount of rust and had to do the acid treatment a bunch of times, so maybe it wouldn't be so time consuming for you.

o.k. i have been through this a few times. i wouldnt waste any money on that kreem or an acid wash. i have done this numerous times, just take off the petcock run some water through the tank. fil the tank with sand or gravel about half way. and shake the hell out of it, then shake the hell out of it some more. then rinse it very thouroughly, and add an inline filter. then just keep it full of gas. i have had very rusty tanks with large amounts of flaking rust. i have used this method and have had success everytime.

yeah... sand in a gas tank, sounds like a killer idea. i think i'd be sticking with the bb's, screws, and chain suggestion. if you use chain its the easiest to get out.

yep just throw some stuff in and shake it around and put a filter on the fuel line afterward
