if you keep gas in it it shouldn't rust any more than it has.

i used an outboard lawn mower fuel filter to keep tank rust out of carb. stuck it between petcock and carb.

you can put a little gas/oil mix in it with some BB's and shake it a bunch to knock the loose rust off. this might keep petcock from becoming blocked.
