should i ressurect my mopeds?

Josha Anderson /

Hi everyone, I was posting in the hope of some help and info.

I have been thinking of rebuilding 1 or 2 mopeds that my dad has had sitting in his back yard yor 5 years or so, I have experience working on cars (in a mechanic apprentsnship now) but have not worked on small engines, is there any major differences in working on them, excluding the lack of an oil and cooling system and movable valves?

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to where to get parts, if there worth rebuilding, which one to pick if i only do one, where to find model info, engine id, manuals, and rilly any info you could provide would be much apreacated. theres still gas and fluids in them (not good I assume)

one is a motobecane sebring, im not sure the year

the other is a bravo piagulo, it says on the plate that it was imported by vespa, it says nothing else but the tire and wheel sizes. I also dont know the year of this

Joshua,

either ped is a nice starting place.

go to the top of the page and read the aritcles on buying a used ped and Fred's guide. They'll get you started.

besides figuring out air colled and two stroke lubrication, you will also find that 2 stroke engines run a bit dirtier and need their exhaust systems cleaned every now and then.

centrifical clutches, too.. oh yea and older ones have points.

Oh, i forgot to mention, the condition of bolth these peds was 5 years ago they stopped running, befour that they ran rough, then they have been sitting in the back yard (in minnesota) for 5 years. they ar free for me to take if i want them, so i would appreciate some opinions as to if its worth it. like i said, im reasonably mecanicly able, and i dont mind spending lots of time, just not lots of money. if someone is in the mpls / st. paul location and is good with mopeds, how about one of these in trade for some help rebuilding one? appreciate the feedback 50plus, very helpful.

Compression, Spark, Fuel.

Freds guide is excellent reading for beginners and it sounds like you have some engine knowledge. With the parts availibility for those bikes, you shouldn't have a problem getting them started at least.

you could easily be dealing with 6 volt machines and AC no less. another fun concept

where would be a good place to start looking for parts?

If those bikes have been sitting outside in MN weather for 5 years, chances are those engines will be seized and the chrome rusted to crap. Unless either bike is in decent cosmetic shape, I'd start looking for another ped to restore.

I will tell you, that with the resources available here, I have done many things that I did not think myself capable of moped-wise.

If you are an actual mechanic, they are much much simpler than what you are used to working on.
