why can't I idle?? (peugeot 103)

I have a problem with my '77 Peugeot 103s idle. It dies at traffic stops (my brake light isn't bad). Now the strange thing is when I play with the idle adjustment screw (at idle) I get the following results:

Engine barely runs then as I ever so slowy tighten the screw, bam it is screaming and revs up high.. Back up the screw a tiny bit, then back to chugging, choking, dead. Even with the idle set high I still stall out at stops. The weird thing is that other than the idle issue it runs great! Full throttle and it doesn't skip a beat. Plug is not fouling either. Just this damn idle.......! Any ideas??

What happens if you try and lean out the idle? Turning it in I can see why it would rev up as it does. What happens if you try turning it out?

If I turn it out it sarts to run real rough and shortly after it dies. The strange thing is that there is such a fine line between running very high rpms, then if I back out the screw a few milimeters it runs rough coughs and dies.

maybe the fuel float has got a hole in it and it is flooding but when you open the throttle enough it takes off mopeds are pretty on off with the throttle anyway all or nothing. Take the float out and hold it up to the light and see if its got fuel inside it. good luck and hey i need to know what plug type and points gap i need for my pug 102 1974 model and by the way do you need the rear light to work for it to run?

Peugeot are noted for the carbs doing this , the very small hole that get clogged up , the bad news is you can't clean , Chris at mopedwanehouse can do it. if you buy a used one you may get one with same prob.

Dos it idle fine on the stand?

If yes, you clutch is the problem, it took me a while to figure out how to put together clutch the corect way.

I like Peugeot mopeds, they did very good job designing that moped.

One more thing, this can't be related to my condensor can it? The reason I ask is that I have had a bit of trouble with condensors on this bike and I just want to rule this out. The good performance and high rpms leads me to think the condensor(and timing) is fine.

This is a common Peugeot problem. The cause is an air leak where the carb mounts onto the intake. Spray carb cleaner on that area while the engine is revving...if it dies, there's your problem. I'd bet a Franklin that's what it is. Solution is to seal the leak...I use liquid gasket despite warnings that it could be sucked into the intake. Works very well.

condensers will fail at lower RMP's rather than higher

just a thought
